Anqing is a sprawling city, and the Phoenix is in a newly-developed district that's relatively convenient to the municipal offices. The hotel overlooks a small lake, and is in a quiet area. Because of its isolation, however, there is nothing within easy walking distance; there is a small convenience store in the lobby, although it seems to close early in the evening.
The Phoenix is a huge property whose architecture tries to evoke a pastiche of European cities, especially Venice. The lobby is cavernous, and features vaulted ceilings with elaborate paintings. Rooms are in a more subdued style, but still make nods to a foreign vision of European opulence. Although the hotel is relatively new, it is already starting to show its age due to lack of careful upkeep. My room was clean, but starting to look a bit worn.
Bedding is very firm. The bathroom was large, with great water pressure in the shower.
Staff members are friendly and helpful, but may not be able to speak English. There are no foreign television channels available. At breakfast, there are a handful of non-Chinese options, but no Western utensils, and only instant coffee is available. It was unappetizing to see dirty flypaper in the dining area's windows. There is a fitness center, but it is only open from noon until 10 PM.
Overall, the Phoenix offers a decent night's sleep and good value in a quiet location. Foreign guests should realize that the amenities typically found in an international chain may not be available, and allow themselves to be entertained by the property's exuberant design.
The hotel has a very fancy reception room. it suppose to be a five star hotel, and from the reception room it is 5 star, but from the room's aspect actually it's like a 3 star hotel in the U.S (e.x. Hilton). the price is not high only about 60 dollar. 60 dollar for this hotel actually is very good.
Travelling thru Anhui province for business. Stayed at this hotel for 2 nights. It was ok. The bed was comfortable, the room was huge. They provided an internet hotspot device for my room which was good. It is out of the city centre so was quiet. Nothing to see in the general area. Food was a bit disappointing, especially breakfast. Good value
I've been recently here for a business convention. I had a look at the pics before coming. The appearance was great! Being in Anqing, the hotel appears to be a strange venue. It looks like to be part of a plan to develop tourism in Anqing inspired by Venice. In fact, the hotel is just on the shore of big ponds/lakes and from the room windows/terrace you can spot them. It means a huge amount of mosquitos!. Also the hotel hall is inspired to Venice, but just inspired, nothing to do with the real Venice. The whole result is a sort of kitch atmosphere that anyhow is not annoying, taking into account you are in Anqing. On the contrary one can appreciate the effort of local administration to boost tourism and attract business conventions.
Service is not bad, provided one cannot expect it's at the same levels of business hotels in Beijing or Shanghai. You get what you need, at the right time.... english is barely spoken but in a way or another one can interact with service people.
Food is not bad, acceptable.
All in all, a good choice in Anqing pretty close to what could be a business hotel.
