Pros:

The location is nice and the hotel is clean/modern. We were put in the basement and the room was large but cold and windowless. The staff was polite but not helpful nor especially accommodating or apologetic given the situation they put us in. In a word, there's no real kindness or hospitality here.

Cons:

The hotel informed us we had cancelled our reservation upon arrival. There was no email from the hotel or Booking.com stating the reservation had been cancelled prior to arriving and we had not cancelled our room. The staff were cagey about receiving a mysterious phone-call making the cancellation but wouldn't tell us what number the call had come from. They moved us from the room we booked into the basement the night we arrived and then moved us into a different hotel for the following night. This was a pretty big disturbance as we had to meet the manager in the morning and wait about 30 mins for her to arrive to the hotel to sort where we were staying.

In essence, the hotel seemed to have overbooked their weekend and we suffered the consequences. It would have been better for everyone if they had been honest about the situation rather than make up a scenario that made it our fault and then put us out to solve it. They did put us in a new hotel but not without stress or a pretty terrible experience in the process. I would be careful booking here.

A beautiful stay from start to finish. Highly recommend.
Pros:

I recently stayed at The Francis and couldn’t have been more delighted. The linens were downright buttery—and the staff was exceptionally helpful at every turn. On a snowy evening, the fireplace in the sitting room made the perfect backdrop for lingering with a glass of wine, creating a wonderfully atmospheric and relaxing retreat.

I also loved that the hotel features accessible, locally made Maine art throughout the space—all of it available for purchase, which adds a thoughtful, community-minded touch.

A beautiful stay from start to finish. Highly recommend.

Wonderful time at The Francis Hotel!
Pros:

My husband and I had a wonderful experience while staying at The Francis Hotel! Our room was very nice and clean. The location in town was great. We could easily walk to everything we wanted to see in downtown Portland. The hotel staff were very accommodating and the vouchers to the Twinflower Cafe across the street were a great touch.

A wonderful stay where guests comfort is a priority!
Pros:

Fantastic stay! A lovely comfortable and luxurious hotel where all of the finishing touches have been thought of. The room was huge, clean and comfortable, with a coffee station well stocked with quality tea and coffee, and the bathroom had lovely premium toiletries. The hotel also has a cosy library room you can use, and complimentary tea and coffee all day - including both dairy and non-dairy milks. The hotel staff were super attentive and very helpful. The front desk team went above and beyond. We were able to park our car at the hotel and leave our luggage, whilst we explored the town before check-in!!! They also provided a voucher for breakfast at the cafe opposite, which was unexpected and most appreciated! A truly excellent stay - thank you!!!

Lovely Fall Escape to Portland Maine
Pros:

We spent two nights at The Francis in Portland, ME. in the West End/Parkside area. This is a boutique hotel with only 15 rooms and is a restored former mansion. It is also it is on the National Park Service's Registry of Historic Places. On October 22, we joined a gathering directly across the street at the Five of Clubs (lounge in the Francis sister property The Longfellow) for a celebration of the iconic Seth Thomas clock outside The Francis and heard remarks from hotels, and local representatives of the Maine Historical Society and Greater Portland Landmarks. It really is a beautiful landmark.

Our room was a Terrace King which had great views and we were able to sit out for bit having beverages. We found that the bed was very comfortable and both got great sleep! While it seemed a busy part of the city and right near Maine Medical Center, I was pleasantly surprised by how quiet the room was. We didn't have time to enjoy the Wayside Tavern which is part of the hotel and open for dinners as we were out and about on both evenings but did appreciate that in the mornings, we were able to just hop across the street to pick up online breakfast order at a very convenient Tandem Coffee Roasters. There was something relaxing about enjoying hot coffee and delicious sticky buns. Note that they also do have coffee in the lobby in the morning if you are up early.

We spend the second day in down on the waterfront and enjoyed shopping and a fabulous lunch at Central Provisions. The hotel provided us with a great jumping off spot to several locations that are well documented on both online and on note cards that were provided at check-in.

All in all, The Francis is unique, clean, quiet and their staff was very warm and welcoming. We truly enjoyed our stay.

Nice hotel with old-Portland atmosphere in historic building
Pros:

Very nice and stylish hotel in historic building. Beautiful furniture, wonderful atmosphere, friendly staff. They offer coffee, tea and some snacks any time and also $15 gift card per person to use for breakfast or lunch at the sister hotel just across the street. Room was very clean, enough space and comfotable bed. No problem with the parking as they have an additional parking space just 1min walk from the hotel. I would highly recommend the Francis Hotel for portland visit.

Cons:

All was great!

A delight in Portland
Pros:

We have had the most delightful stay while at the Francis. From the moment I booked the hotel I was touched by the personal messages welcoming us to the hotel. Upon our arrival we were greeted by Tino, the kind and attentive person responsible for much of the correspondence. We could not have been made to feel more welcome, setting the stage for this relaxing and luxurious stay. Tino made things more comforting by offering a lovely glass of sparkling blueberry wine (not sweet, to my delight). And to make matters more stunning, the restaurant adjacent to the hotel, Wayside, is spectacular. So good that we dined there both nights of our short stay. Thank you to all the staff that made this a memorable stay.

The Francis Hotel is a lovely place to stay while in Portland.
Pros:

The Francis Hotel is a lovely, quiet boutique hotel with thoughtful little spots to sit and listen to music or read throughout the hotel. Local art is hung on the walls. The King room comes with a pour over coffee setup with step by step instructions, a wonderful selection of teas, local magazines, toiletries and a wonderful shower. The staff are very welcoming and helpful. I appreciated the handwritten welcome note left in my room. Guests are offered a welcome cocktail upon arrival and also receive a $15 gift card to the breakfast spot across the street. I would highly recommend the Francis Hotel and will absolutely stay here again if in the area.
