Great location, friendly staff, rooms are up to date and well stocked with amenities. I would recommend staying here when needing to stay in SF
I stayed at this hotel for a business trip so I would not have picked it. The staff were friendly and attentive, the beds were super comfy and rooms well appointed. Room service was swift. The roof bar was really nice, good cocktails and wine list.
The tenderloin areas of San Francisco is tragic, don’t stay here. So many unwell homeless people. Have to get an uber to go anywhere.
The hotel was very expensive and had tiny rooms. Breakfast was not included. Dark decor in rooms and lights so dim you can’t see in the wardrobe. Sorry folks not coming back
I was underwhelmed by this hotel and will not stay again. The common areas were dingy and tired, and the neighborhood felt unsafe when returning from dinner in the evening. The coffee in the lobby was excellent, but there was no coffee maker in the room. The staff's hospitality was inconsistent, with door staff standing by while I hauled my bags up the stairs unassisted. On the positive side, the bed was excellent, the room was clean and extremely quiet.
Celebrated 50th bday with friends... great view and interior was stunning... rooftop spot was amazing! The suite was spacious and well decorated. Will book again!
The hotel is in a terrible location. It does not feel safe to walk around. If you booked a bunk bed, think twice. They are small and uncomfortable.
While the neighborhood is not the hotel's fault.. it is shocking to me that Marriott markets a "luxury" hotel that costs $600-$1000 a night in an area of San Francisco that is truly disturbing. At night, you cannot step foot outside of the hotel. It is like the walking dead - an open air drug market packed with hundreds of people openly shooting up, defecating on the street. It is a mix of zombie apocalypse, mental health crises, and bodily waste...that is still present on the street in the morning. Literally, watch out for multiple piles of human feces scattered throughout the sidewalk in the morning. I had booked for 2 nights and switched hotels because coming back at night was harrowing. During the day it was like a dystopian Black Mirror episode - mix of heavy homelessness, tons of people rolling off drugs from the night before, and tech bros at an AI conference. It is all so so sad. Save yourself some money and stay literally anywhere else in the city.
Terrible hotel. Rooms are small, dark, dirty, non-functional... no place to store clothes. The carpet in the entry was stained and dirty and set the tone. The restaurant staff was amazing was the only highlight.
Great experience at Proper. Never had been to SF before and this hotel made our trip worthwhile. Great rooftop bar, great staff, and wonderful room. Will be back.
This wasn’t our first stay at the San Francisco Proper Hotel — we’ve stayed here a couple of times now — and it continues to be one of our favorite spots when we come into the city for theater weekends.
The location is incredibly convenient for the theater and makes it easy to enjoy everything nearby, especially the great restaurants and energy around Hayes Valley. We love being able to walk to dinner, the show, and back without worrying about transportation.
The hotel itself has a chic, designer charm that feels uniquely San Francisco — stylish, comfortable, and thoughtfully done without feeling over the top. It always feels like a fun, special city getaway.
We had breakfast during this visit and it was delicious, with really excellent coffee, and my wife especially enjoyed her tea — a perfect way to start the morning.
One highlight is the rooftop bar, Lookout. We only went up to take a look this time, but it’s an amazing space with great views and looked like an awesome place to hang with friends and enjoy a cocktail.
We were on the sixth floor and the room was wonderfully quiet — no street noise at all — which made for a very restful sleep.
Overall, this remains a go-to hotel for us when we’re in the city for a show: beautiful design, great dining, a fun rooftop vibe, and an unbeatable location.
This is a lovely hotel. Very stylish rooms. Mine was a tad on the small side, but was thoughtfully designed to make efficient use of the space, with a large closet, fully stocked mini and snack bar, and a couch and marble-topped table in the room — along with a King bed.
Staff were professional and very friendly. I ordered room service for breakfast, which was delivered quickly, and I just want to say that I think that was the best overnight oats I’ve ever eaten.
I was visiting family in SF on this trip and arrived via BART at around 4:30 pm on a Sunday. I exited at the Civic Center station, and walked a block to the hotel. Nobody bothered me, and I didn’t feel unsafe.
A charming hotel. Friendly, welcoming staff. Very comfortable bed and sheets. Quiet. AC wouldn't stay on for more than an hour at a time and hotel was unable to repair this during our stay. The "repair" entailed disabling the GFI plug in the bathroom. Upon resetting the plug, the fan turned right back on and stay that way, unless I disabled to plug myself. Our room had a cracked inner window. The blackout shade mechanism jammed on our final night in the open position. The rooftop bar has a terrific view and was a pleasant place to hang out. I wouldn't care to walk around the neighborhood at night, but I knew that before I got there. An excellent location as far as getting anywhere else you want to go in the city from North Beach to the mission.
Excellent hotel! The staff is all around fantastic. The minute you walk in the door - people are kind, happy and make you feel comfortable right away. The hotel is in great condition and comfortable enough to not want to leave!!!
My fifth stay at The Proper was another truly lovely one. This time, I convinced two other couples to book as well, as we were all headed to the same birthday celebration in Haight Ashbury— needless to say, they were just as charmed.
We decided to splurge (the rate was too good to pass up) and booked the King Suite, which offered an incredibly spacious living area and a completely separate bedroom— ideal for both comfort and leisure. As a corner suite, it also delivered sweeping views from multiple angles that made the space feel even more special.
From the moment we arrived— warmly greeted by Warren at the door— to our all-too-soon departure the following day, when he once again thoughtfully escorted us to our car, the experience was seamless, welcoming, and full of ease. We wished we could have stayed for a week… and one day, we absolutely will.
My husband booked a night for my 60th birthday along with my brother and his wife on separate bookings using Marriott points. A day before we were to arrive, my sister in law had a medical emergency in the UK, her mother was taken ill and was in the hospital, so of corse all parties cancelled our booking and she flew to the UK. Apparently the hotel had a 72 hour cancellation in place, so charged us and my brother $220 as we only cancelled 24 hours before. Both parties called the hotel to explain the situation and they could care less. I understand policy, but under these circumstances, denying a cancellation is cruel. My sister in law in particular had the cost of the last minute flight and then the hotel on top. To say the least, we won’t be booking again.
There are many options of great hotels in San Francisco, and I would suggest if choosing a weekend away, you pick somewhere that respects its guests and are somewhat flexible should an emergency occur. Not impressed.
Hotel is great, neighborhood is a disaster area. I am from an urban area and live downtown but this was way worse than I expected. Website description of the neighborhood is misleading. It is not an area for children, teenagers under 18, or anyone uncomfortable with significant urban squalor, e.g., very significant drug use and dealing, lots of mentally ill folks wandering around, streets dirty with everything from feces to needles, etc. I didn't feel in danger per se, but it’s pretty nasty out there. Women (or men, really) traveling alone may well feel uncomfortable or scared. At minimum you’ll see some things you won’t be able to unsee.
I paid $6,600 for 3 nights in a tiny 250 sq foot room. Had to shower with cold water every one of those mornings, the water pressure was extremely low, and there were drainage issues with the sink. The lights were damaged and therefore made it feel like a dark alley way my entire stay. Not recommended
The hotel is quite beautiful, and the design is remarkable. The staff is always eager to assist. I look forward to my next visit.
Great hotel with history and character. Very nice ammentities. The room windows need to be cleaned, but overall the rooms and common areas are clean and well decorated. Service was good. They need more bellman carts for guests. The City of SF needs to clean up the exterior streets of homelessness and loitering outside the hotel. The rooftop restuarant should expand their menu, limited small options only.
A real gem of a hotel. Decor was exquisite throughout. Extremely friendly staff all the way through. Beautiful rooftop bar.
Located just down the street from the Orpheum Theater. Great hotel, the roof top bar is amazing. Staff is terrific, they really go out of their way to serve you.
