The Godwins

Avoid The Godwins at all costs. What we experienced here was not just unacceptable — it was unsafe, unsanitary, and frankly disgraceful for any business claiming to offer accommodation.
We arrived to find a room in a condition that can only be described as hazardous. The walls showed significant damp ingress, blown plaster, and visible white mould — clear indicators of long term neglect. This wasn’t a minor issue or a recent problem. A TripAdvisor review from December 2025 shows the exact same damage above the bed frame, meaning the hotel has knowingly allowed guests to sleep in a mould affected room for months without carrying out essential repairs.
Despite the fact that we did not stay for a single night, and despite their own staff agreeing on site that the room was unfit for occupation, The Godwins has refused to issue a full refund. They have instead returned only 50%, meaning they are still withholding £125.
Their response to our complaint was dismissive, misleading, and failed to acknowledge the seri-ousness of the health risks involved. They even attempted to offer a “10% discount on a future stay” — an insulting gesture given the circumstances. They have not offered a single penny in compensation for the inconvenience, the lost time, or the additional £150 we were forced to spend because of their negligence.
The Godwins has demonstrated:
• Long term neglect of its rooms
• Failure to address mould, damp, and structural defects
• Unsafe accommodation posing genuine health risks
• Refusal to provide a full refund for a stay that never occurred
• Lack of accountability and poor customer service
• No compensation for the time lost or the extra costs they directly caused
Because of their practices, we are now £275 worse off — £125 withheld from our refund and £150 spent on emergency accommodation — plus the wasted hours of our weekend.
This is not a business that cares about guest safety, property standards, or basic fairness.

Room should have been serviced every day. Not just the once during our stay.
When I talked to the cleaning staff on the 3rd day. The girl stated she had knocked on the room door to service the room. However, this did not happen as one or the other of us were in the room until we left for the day. Then we hung a "Service my room" notice on the outside door handle of the room.
The Bathroom had no Ventilation or windows that opened & was unbearably hot. The Bathroom sink was missing a plug & the sink drained extremely slowly.
The rooms walls had large damp patches with paint peeling off.
A lot of the surfaces were unclean & dusty. Especially on the top of wardrobe.
Locals in the bar on an evening were 'F'ing & Blinding loudly, without thought for residents or other guests. Bar staff seemed to accept &/or join in & did not challenge this behaviour. Very intimidating & put us off wanting to eat in the bar.

Some finishing touches were missing. Including some missing light bulbs/bedside lights with nowhere to plug them in, strange size of mattress for the bed, tea/coffee and milk might have been nice.

No air con - did have a fan but didn’t work well

Die Küche war leider nicht vorhanden. Auch Frühstück wurde nicht angeboten.

The two pictures above the bed…. So out of place compared to the others!!
Felt a bit overlooked by the properties across from the bar garden.
Appreciated the fridge although the noises it made were somewhat haunting!!

It was really hot in our room and the fan was very weak - made for an uncomfortable night’s sleep. They should upgrade the fans and it would be great.
