My wife and I liked the personal attention and suggestions for activities in Villarica that Kelly suggested. The Hosteria de la Colina was our home from home for almost a week!
Fomos muito bem recebidos, o problema é que eles não sabiam que íamos. Houve algum problema de comunicação entre vocês. Or sorte havia quarto livre. Mas não estavam preparados para receber-nos.
Unlike other enthusiastic reviews, we thought this hotel was over-priced and not very good. The setting is wonderful, on a hill outside the town and with gorgeous views of the lake from the delightful garden and from some rooms (ours included). But there the praise ends. What must once have been a fine, characterful hotel is now run-down and tired. Rooms are large, but the bathrooms are shabby and there was only tepid water at 4pm after we returned from a long, hot, dusty walk. The owners did not appear to be around and the manager rarely appeared, so most of the time there was no one here to serve at the bar. We did buy one round of drinks, but then the manager disappeared again, so we couldn’t easily order another. He didn’t speak much English, so communication was very limited. The breakfast was very basic and at USD89 per night, we felt the hotel was extremely over-priced. It has huge potential and was clearly lovely in its day under the old owners, but in its present state we would not recommend it.
We stayed 3 nights & ate there 2 nights -- a small menu with great food, and the service was excellent. Breakfast was very good, with real coffee and cooked-to-order eggs.
Our room was small, in a smaller building. Our friends were in a larger room in the main building with a door leading to the patio that overlooks the garden and lake. Volcan Villarrica is just behind some trees, and the stars were wonderful at night.
The family that runs it is very friendly; it was almost like being welcomed into their family. Their English is excellent (good since our Spanish is terrible) and they helped plan our daytrips to avoid the summer traffic.
Everything is modern and clean, wifi is good, there's lots of parking. We all loved it.
