Cartesiano still has a number of things to recommend it. The location is fantastic (though we saw more graffiti in the surrounding Sapos neighborhood than in previous trips), the siting within an old ceramic factory remains marvelous, the room decor and bedding are fresh, and the food is delicious. Room rates are reasonable. If you choose to stay here, just temper your expectations some.
So disappointing.
There are two plaques in the lobby celebrating accolades from a Condé Nast Traveler survey in 2018. Readers that year voted Cartesiano the best hotel in Mexico, and indeed, the second highest rated in the world.
Eight years later, Cartesiano probably isn't even the best hotel in Puebla. How sad.
Our room, 208, had stained upholstery, and dingy towels. The rain shower head was rusty, and the water temperature kept fluctuating between cold and scalding. Our request for additional drinking water was greeted by sending us to the restaurant where we could pay for it. Five stars? Absolutely, if they have changed the scale from one to ten.
The rooftop pool remains a photogenic setting. But the wood deck is faded and chipped in parts, the glass is spotty, the supports coming out of the pool have seen better days. Even the pool water was a bit murky.
Service was variable at best. Room service coffee was timely, but two mornings came in china, whereas the third morning it was in Starbucks-style paper to- go cups. Breakfast on the rooftop terrace was abundantly pleasant but at times, we had to search for servers.
In all, this once-superlative hotel is slipping. It looks worn, and the details associated with such a celebrated hotel are lacking. Cartesiano was once a part of The Leading Hotels of the World but is not longer--this situation may be why.
I hope the hotel freshens itself. Until it does, a hotel once celebrated as the second best in the world is merely second best.

Das Hotel ist relativ neu und von hoher architektonischer Qualität. Besonders gefallen hat uns die Einrichtung der Zimmer, der Rooftop Pool und der gesamte Rooftop Bereich mit schöne Aussicht und einen guten Service.
Die Lage am Rande der Altstadt ist perfekt um in 5 Minuten zu den schönsten Gassen und zum Zocalo zu gelangen.
Das Personal war überall sehr hilfsbereit und kompetent, unser Auto wurde eigenständig geparkt, und das Gepäck aufs Zimmer gebracht. Auch das Frühstück war ausgezeichnet.
Wir sind einen Tag länger geblieben als geplant weil uns das Hotel und auch Puebla so gut gefallen hat.
Als einzigen Kritikpunkt ist uns in Erinnerung, dass der Frühstücksraum nicht geheizt war, wir haben uns auf die Terrasse in die Sonne gesetzt und da war es warm genug.
This hotel is stunning. The design is faultless, the gardens are lovely and it’s in the centre of the vibrant town of Puebla. The pool area is also very appealing, with ample shade from parasols. You can hear the traffic noise from below but you are in the centre of town, and the view from the sun beds is of tree tops. The beds and pillows are extremely comfortable and the rooms are spacious, with good sound insulation. Breakfast is good and varied, and the food on the third floor restaurant is good.
The overall feeling is one of comfort and wellbeing.
Nothing worth mentioning.
