Really impressed with the building, and felt privileged to stay at such an elegant place with so many original features.
I did read the reviews, unfortunately a number of people were inaccurate with the construction date, Edwardian and not Victorian. Also heavy criticism of not having modern facilities. Im sure its highly likely, owing to its listed status, Grade II, that there are limitations on what can be changed. If you want modern go to a premier inn...
For me, this delightful old building, with its high standards of visitor care from the staff, is a tribute to Carlisle the owners of the building and the community. Also, most will miss this, but if you walk 200 yards down the road above the M & S building there are 2 very historic stone panels, worth a look, very significant in the Unions history.
Only had the breakfast but this was wonderful, with the best / thickest black Pudding and sausages I have had for a long time.
Will be staying there in the future, thank you.
A lot of chemicals in the pool, bit overpowering. Bed was quite small, but in fairness we could have chosen bigger.
Ottima posizione , hotel confortevole , professionalità
Menù internazionale . Preferirei una maggiore attenzione ai cibi tradizionali e al pesce
The staff were pleasant
I was on the 3 rd floor and the lift wasn't working. The shower had black mould on and the cover of the head of the shower fell off. Thr bed was not comfortable.
The pool and jacuzzi
Both mattresses need to be replaced. Housekeeping did give us toppers, but a mattress where you feel all the ribbing should have been replaced ages ago.
The lifts were not working, we were given a room on the 3rd floor and when you have an issue with your ankle this is troublesome.
A bit noisy in the morning with the staff taking the vacuum cleaners into the hallways.
Food was beautiful and staff very welcoming and accommodating at breakfast.
Getting to car park was a struggle for us even with the postcode we were given along with guidance. Not sure if that was down to us but it was a problem.
Central location close to cathedral and castle. Barely 5 minutes from station. Good sized rooms, which were really comfortable.
Without being picky there's nothing to dislike
Beautiful building, friendly staff, lovely food, nice if small swimming pool. Very clean. Staff were very attentive, helped me with my bags. I'm gluten free and there were plenty of options. The lady at breakfast knew everything about the gluten free options, and I could have got a gluten free sandwich at 3am with the 24hr menu of I'd wanted! Lovely big single room with a small double bed and huge bathroom.
My satnav took me to the front of the building, but the car park is at the back so you need a different postcode for that as it's all one way streets and pedestrian areas. However if I had read the full instructions on the listing it did tell me that, just wasn't that obvious. Also I couldn't change the temperature in my room and the radiators were off, it being May buy a very cold May! It was okay though and only because it was a rare cold spell in May.
Ticked all the boxes. Location, facilities, great staff and great value for money
Only negative was on my particular stay the lift was out of order. Not so much an issue for myself but I imagine some guests could have struggled a bit
Its location in the centre of town is excellent, and with free (limited) on-site parking, it really is very convenient. I ate in the restaurant and the food was pretty good and relatively well-priced.
The lift was out of order, so being on the 3rd floor was a bit of a pain, but didn’t really bother me. The bed was quite comfortable, the room relatively clean, but the walls were very thin.
In the middle of the city staff friendly and helpful would stay again
