Exceptional service! The girls at the front desk arranged the transportation of one of my luggages. They even kept the luggage for several days in order to meet delivery service requirements.

Pros:

We were very happy with our choice. The location of the Alza Hotel is perfect, next to the Kamokawa, giving you easy access to restaurants, shops, shrines, temples, gardens and everything the beautiful city of Kyoto offers. The metro or train stations and the bus stops are very near and if you choose to call a taxi, the hotel staff will gladly help you to get one easily. Although in the heart of a busy quarter, this hotel is a quiet retreat with a calm atmosphere.
The room was spacious and very confortable. Breakfast is served in your room and you can choose Japanese or western.
In general the hotel staff were very welcoming and helpful, attentive to all our requests.. We enjoyed our stay and highly recommend this hotel.
If you come in the Sakura season the Alza hotel is surrounded by the cherry blossom!

Cons:

We liked everything. Only would perhaps suggest the western breakfast could include some cereals and more choice of fruit and iogurt. Having said that, we didn't ask for it. But I asked for matcha and they got me a nice mild matcha every morning. The Japanese breakfast was very good.

Excellent except for unreported tax charge
Pros:

Beautiful location with river view and in the center. Curtains open automatically when you first enter the room. Good coffee and cookies available downstairs. Staff made extra effort to relocate us to our room of choice. Breakfast is served to the room. We ordered both the European and Japanese breakfast and both were fine. Many restaurants and attractions within walking distance.

Cons:

Blue, green and red LED lights of electronic controls light up the room at night. Needed to cover with pillows. We had to pay 1600 yen tax despite the fact that the booking stated clearly that no additional charges apply. We would have rated this property 10 if they had been candid about the extra tax

Fabulous Hotel to stay at in Kyoto
Pros:

Second stay at Hotel Alza Kyoto and still excellent. Perfect location—walkable to many sights and just minutes from the train and buses, even a direct line to Fushimi—yet quiet and relaxing away from the crowds.
Staff were warm and helpful, and as a solo traveller, I really appreciated the generous touches, with two of everything provided in the room. Many hotels don't.
Highly recommend.
