The staff were lovely, really friendly and attentive.
The decor was great, particularly the public areas.
The shower was fabulous.
The evening meal was the only thing that let the stay down. Food on the mixed grill was overcooked, possibly left too long under heat lamps and the sauce with the chicken forestiere was extremely salty. Not quite the expectation from a Marco Pierre White restaurant.
Staff and the breakfast was excellent!
We booked dinner at the hotel’s restaurant for a group of eight. Due to limited space inside, we were seated on the terrace instead. Unfortunately, the terrace lacked atmosphere compared to the main restaurant area. Although the staff member serving us was polite and tried to be attentive, service was slow as we often had to wait for him to come back upstairs to take drink orders or assist us. As we were celebrating my son’s birthday, it was disappointing that the experience didn’t feel as special or enjoyable as we had hoped.
The on site parking and being so close to the city make it very convenient for a city visit. The building itself, the Shire Hall originally, is different and fun. Breakfast was good.
The building is a listed one and the improvised "internal the double glazing", didn't work well in our room which was at the front of the hotel on a very busy road. The traffic noise became intrusive from about 5.30 am. The only dining option whilst we were there was the Marco Pierre White restaurant which was full for both nights so not an option as we had not pre-booked. We were advised this might happen but understood there was a bar food option. However the bar, which is small anyway, was not serving food due to staff issues. The hotel is so close to the city centre so was not really a problem for us.
This is a majestic building with ornate fixtures such as stained glass windows and wood panelling from its history as a former council building and university building.
The breakfast was very good with a cold buffet and a hot breakfast cooked to order so it was piping hot and well cooked. It stood out from usual hotel breakfasts.
The room was comfortable and quite dark as a bulb was missing from one of the lamps, this was remedied straight away after contacting reception.
The 12pm checkout time was helpful too.
The windows were fixed - it would’ve been good to open a window for fresh air.
Everything
Nothing
Decor is stunning hotel room was very nice and comfortable
We had dinner in MPW steakhouse service was not good waited for very long g periods between courses and food was not hot. Waiter advised they had a big table in another room that affected service we were not the only patrons to be unhappy. Breakfast was a different experience Eni was brilliant ran the service efficiently and with a smile.
All excellent except breakfast, generous but a couple of problems
Coffee machine broken for both days and no marmalade also both days…surely not beyond the whit of somebody to get sorted ?
Location. Restaurant. Rooms.
No comfortable lounge. Extremely dim lighting in the room. It may be trendy but please give the option of a bright central light or lamp.
The exit sign
Double charged for extras, only responded when I notified them, bottle champagne ordered for arrival, no ice , when requested approx 5-6 pieces given .
For price of room , very small , . Finally after asking for no black pudding on breakfast , was delivered with black pudding, when I informed member of breakfast team , she leaned over and removed it from my plate with her bare hands .
All in all I’d heard the hype of this establishment, tried it , will definitely not be returning.
Friendly and helpful staff. Great location and lovely historic decor. The bar was gorgeous and the restaurant was too. We were on the ground floor near the bar and once we were in our room we couldn’t hear any noise from either inside or outside the hotel.
It was a good location for Durham Cathedral. A beautiful, old building with lots of original features, sympathetically renovated. Our room was a good size with a large ensuite bathroom, which included a large walk in shower. The bed was really comfortable. There were lovely, good sized mugs and two little packets of gorgeous biscuits. Breakfast was delicious and a good choice. We would definitely stay again.
We couldn't fault it at all..
