The breakfast was good
The staff was rude
I stayed at this hotel with my family for two nights while visiting Virginia Tech (the property is about a 35-minute drive from campus). While check-in was uneventful, the hotel is clearly showing its age.
Upon entering the room, we were met with a musty smell typical of older properties, even though the AC was blasting and the window was left slightly ajar. While the bedding was clean, the room itself was very outdated.
The main issue was sleeping at night due to the HVAC system:
- Excessive Noise: The AC unit runs as loud as a tractor inside the room.
- Defective Thermostat: The temperature sensor barely functions. When the AC kicks on, it cools the room to an freezing temperature before shutting off. It then fails to detect when the room warms up, delaying the next cycle until you are already sweating. You end up constantly freezing and sweating with every single cycle.
Additionally, the bathroom plumbing design is frustrating. The bathtub and sink are equipped with permanent stoppers/plugs. Very few guests soak in a hotel bathtub, and these stoppers only serve to block the drain during a shower, leaving you standing in pooled wastewater.
I would not recommend this hotel and certainly will not be staying here again.
Breakfast was very good. Location was very convenient on our way to our Northern destination.
Quite location. Best night’s sleep at hotel in a long time.

It was clean and staff was very friendly
The air conditioner was not working and they handed us two fans to put in the room and also handed me more towels instead of bringing them to us
staff was very friendly, housekeeping had the room spotless and the beds were very comfy!
we all enjoyed our stay
The beds were extremely uncomfortable. Way too hard. I woke up with sciatica and hip pain due to the mattress.
Everything it was nice and clean, The staff was AMAZING!! Thank you all for your hospitality.
I can’t think of anything
Conveniently located. The kind lady in charge of the breakfast buffet was so very personable and attentive.
Looked online for a room in Salem. Booking site said payment not necessary until arrival. Card was immediately charged. TV’s in entire facility were out. Booking.com has not honored $50 discount we were told would be given.
The price was triple the normal rate due to the graduation at Virginia Tech. It's ridiculous.
The hotel is very clean and perhaps some parts have been renovated. We stayed on floor 2 and the carpet when you get off the elevator is rolling up and needs to be replaced. You can tell the hotel is heavily traveled but it’s not run down aside from the carpet there.
Room wise, furnishings are ok. The beds are the challenge. They are on platforms and the mattresses move anytime you touch them. We had to move the mattresses back into place numerous times.
Also the queen rooms are all tub/shower. We prefer shower only due to knee and back issues. There were no handicapped queen rooms available. We were a same day reservation so we don’t hold that against them. The front desk person working on Sunday May 31 at 5pm - African American female was the most friendly and helpful desk associate we have encountered on our trip and we’ve now been to 3 hotels. They also provided a little goodie bag for our dog which had a reusable bowl, paw wipes, potty bags and treats. We also got two waters and some goldfish crackers for us humans. If they updated a few things like the carpet I’d have given them a 5. Very clean well kept hotel
The breakfast was wonderful and the breakfast lady outstanding (Deborah)
