Good Potential, but Some Frustrating Problems
Pros:

The Chengdu Chuanjia Heyuan Theme Hotel has great potential, with a staff that is extremely gracious and kind, but currently has some major issues that need to be addressed before I can fully recommend it. The first issue is that there are no staff members who can understand nor passably speak English. The second, and most pressing issue is the profound lack of knowledge on the part of the staff about the city of Chengdu, sightseeing in Chengdu, transportation in Chengdu, historical aspects of Chengdu, or indeed, any touristic aspect of the city. Everything that an international visitor would need to know in order to tour Chengdu was unknown to or perplexed the staff. It was as if the staff was absolutely unfamiliar with any non-Chinese guests. Combined with the staff’s lack of English language skills, it was an exasperatingly frustrating experience to get anything done and was an enormous waste of precious vacation time. All communication had to be done through translation apps on the staff’s iPhones. (Google is blocked in China, and I was unable to look up anything on my Chrome Book.) It was as if the staff were dumbfounded that I did not know my way around Chengdu, or that I would have to ask for directions. Despite major deficits, the Chengdu Chuanjia Heyuan Theme Hotel has some very positive aspects. The location is good, the price competitive, and there is a quirky vibe to the place with an inviting common area with a free tea service.
