Old run down hotel, dirty rooms, bad breakfast
Pros:

The hotel is so run down. It was screaming for some serious renovation work. The room was so dirty and the breakfast buffet was bad. Until they up their game I will not recommend this hotel to anyone. The room was not cleaned properly, takeaway boxes of previous guest dated four days prior to our stay and under the sofa was another world. Mini bar fridge was broken, would not cool so we had to throw away some of our own food. Air conditioning did not get cool, room an uncomfortable 29C. Shower would never get hot, luke warm at best.

Nice location with 'ancient' furniture
Pros:

Another stay in San Want hotel. Staff is always nice, rooms are large and clean. There are plenty of shopping and dining options around and the MRT station is right in front of the hotel. The hotel offers a decent breakfast with average coffee.
Funnily, the rooms are equipped with furniture that is almost 'ancient'. It has some 70s style. Depending on your room, this also comes with the typical marks and scratches from daily use.
Overall a good pick in the center of a bustling city.

First time in China
Pros:

Me and my European friends did a East Tibet trip so this hotel is our first base before moving to our next destination. We stayed here in San Want Hotel Xining for 4 days & 3 nights. At first there is no one in front desk and we have to ring a bell for them to accomodate us. They gave us a nice double bed room at 23rd floor and a colorful city view as we get here early in the evening. To sum it up, we had a comfortable stay. Breakfast are standard. I would say, this is a good hotel to stay if you intend to roam around the city. There are plenty of shopping malls and public market surrounded the hotel so it is real convinient for local shoppers or tourist.

Respite while waiting for night train to Lhasa
Pros:

Very comfortable place to hang out during the day and recover after flights from US to Beijing to Xining, before boarding the overnight train to Lhasa. (Complimentary snacks and water.) Shopping center across the street (take the overpass) has a grocery store in the basement, which is a good place to buy food for the journey.

Great Location
Pros:

We stayed two nights before travelling to Tibet. This hotel although a bit dated is in a central location, the rooms are clean and the bed comfortable. The staff are very helpful and friendly. The breakfast were fine and on a standard with all hotels we visited in China. We would recommend this hotel.

Good hotel in central location
Pros:

While this hotel maybe a little dated compared to the newer 5 star Sofitel / Sebel hotels in Xining , this hotel in much better central location. Ideal base if travelling through Amdo area for flights from Xining to other areas in China or Lhasa. Hotel room and bed clean and comfortable, some staff speak English at the front desk. Housekeeping are prompt at dealing with any issues. Breakfast ok - catering more for the Chinese guests but still enough western dishes. Busy food alleys around back of hotel. Would stay here again if in Xining.

Good, friendly hotel
Pros:

Well located hotel with adequate facilities. Room was a bit small and TV services were limited and not as per the directory.
Good spread at breakfast. Good choices and reasonable quality.

Good location and very helpful staff
Pros:

This is a good hotel for staying especially if you are catching train to Lhasa.
First, if you are flying in by yourself, the most economical way to hotel is as follows.
1. When you exit the airport, there is a booth that sells public bus ticket to town.
2. Purchase a ticket for RMBb 21.
3. Go outside where the public buses (express) are located and make sure that you get onto the bus for Yinlomg Hotel. (Ask in English as it seems like all the helpers who load the luggage understand and knows the correct bus.)
4. Get off at Yinlong hotel stop (first stop) and note that there will be taxis waiting behind the bus on the street.
5. Take a taxi; but negotiate price in advance and know that it should not be more than 10 RMB to hotel.
6. Taxi will drop you off at taxi stop which is a short distance pass the hotel.
7. You must walk back up the street to get to the entrance of hotel.
Note: the manager speaks excellent English and she will ask you to
endure you have train ticket, Tibet permit, etc.

For meals, there is new mall across the street (major street) with reasonable choices of restaurants and decent prices. If you want cheap street food, there is the pedestrian mall behind the hotel.

Taxi to the train station is reasonable, get the approximate cost from hotel staff. They gave me the high side as my trip cost less. Staff will help you get a taxi from the same taxi stop area where the taxi dropped you off. Strange, but taxis are not allowed to drop off or pick up in front of hotel. All legal taxis are metered; strongly suggest only use metered taxis.

Enjoy the hotel, it is clean and has a decent breakfast. Staff is very helpful and if you think they do not understand, ask to speak to manager, she will take care of you.

Comfortable stay
Pros:

Quite a good hotel in Xining with good location and fairly acceptable price. It is located at the city center. Rooms are big with good amenities and snacks! Only problem is breakfast, limited choice of western breakfast while the taste of its Chinese breakfast is slightly disappointing

Pros:

Clean hotel with a bit outdated decor, however stuff is really helpful and english-speaking. They can support with organizing tours (i took a private one to qinghai hu). Windows are badly insulated and you may here the noice from outside.

Great location & value
Pros:

First note that hotel goes by 2 names: San Wang & San Want which may cause some confusion. We stayed for 4 days to acclimate to the altitude before heading to Lhasa, Tibet on the train. There is plenty to do to keep you busy while you hang out there. The hotel staff mostly do not speak English, but it seems everyone has a translator app on their phones which is very handy. Rooms were clean and more than adequate. Breakfast has mostly Chinese options but there is plenty for westerners as well, even eggs cooked to order. I would definitely stay here again as it is in a very central location.

OK
Pros:

Nice, but not great. Spotty WiFi.
Good breakfast with nice Chinese and western offerings.
Fair location -- had a nice alley with good restaurants beside it. Long walk to parks and points of interest. Convenient to supermarkets and shopping.

Good value
Pros:

We stayed here for 5 nights. Our room was clean and comfortable, the staff were friendly and helpful (especially Sherry) and most spoke some English. Decor a little faded in some places but generally good. The hotel is in a central location, with shops and restaurants nearby. Sherry was able to book a car with driver for us. It worked out quite expensive but Mr Yur was extremely helpful and cooperative and helped to make our trips successful. Very good choice at breakfast in pleasant dining room.

Sherry was amazing
Pros:

Difficult to rate this hotel. It is in a town that travellers only go to so they can have a day or two at half altitude before they go to Lhasa, therefore there is no infrastructure for tourists.
It is a typical Chinese hotel with no smoking signs everywhere including the lifts, that does not stop the Chiese smoking (even in a lift).
However for us the star of this hotel was Sherry who runs the reception team. We had problems printing out our visas because I thought I had done it before leaving UK. As my mail is Gmail I had issues getting the mails to Sherry but we got there in the end. She then came with us to the train station to make sure we got our tickets. This is the short version of a long story. Without her help our trip to Tibet would have been in ruins, she probably spent her whole afternoon helping us and nothing was too much trouble. A TOTAL STAR

Good value
Pros:

Stayed 2 nights, easy to get to by taxi from airport, which was only 110 yuen.  Reception large and staff very helpful can speak english. We arrived 10 am and was given a room immediately,  which was very much appreciated. Free WIFI very good. Breakfast was great, mainly chinese ( salad, rice, noodles, vegetables) but had pastries, toast, fresh fruit, sausages, bacon, boiled eggs, yoghurt and plenty coffee and juice. Bed room large and very clean and 1 large bed, flat screen TV (3 english channels, movies, discovery and national geographic) table chairs, fridge, coffee facilities, water free and safe. Bathroom clean spacious and very nice toiletries, bathrobe and slippers. The bath was a lovely sunken bath. Hotel is within waking distance of shops and restaurants, safe area and very clean. Taxi ride to railway station was only 11 yuan. Would stay again and definitely recommend, hotel.
