We managed to get a really good deal on the accommodation, which made it value for money. The hotel is small and has a nice boutique feel to it. Our room was quite spacious, with a large and comfortable bed. Staff were friendly, breakfast was nice (although do be aware it’s only available at allocated time slots), and there was a good range of cocktails available at the bar to accompany our lazy afternoons.
Having seen photos and read reviews prior to booking, I don't think the hotel quite had the wow factor I'd expected, and I'm not sure I'd have felt the same value for money had we paid full price.
Although the hotel is centrally located, it’s roughly two blocks from the main street, and the walk to and from the property involves some fairly dark, unsealed roads. It wasn’t a safety concern for us, however I wasn’t expecting quite such a dark walk back in the evenings.

Umami hotel is a gorgeous boutique adult only hotel centrally located in Puerto Viejo. The A/C and bed made the room very comfortable and the staff was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. I will be staying here again on my next trip, I highly recommend this hotel especially what you get for the price!

This is my experience and probably should have know better. But other places may make accomdation such as a future credit, charge for only the first night or many other ways to make an accomdation.
I had to cancel a prepaid reservation 48 hours before arrival due to a documented medical illness. Unfortunately, the hotel's cancellation policy required seven days' notice, so I understood I might lose my payment. However, I contacted the hotel, explained the medical emergency, and requested a goodwill exception. Despite providing the circumstances, the hotel declined any refund or credit. I respect that businesses have policies, but I was disappointed by the lack of flexibility for a genuine medical emergency. Future travelers should be aware that this property appears to enforce its cancellation policy even in cases of documented illness.
