Old English guest house near the sea
No restaurant. Tiny showers. Lack of staff. Shambolic administration. Awful communication with guests.
For they told us the day before arrival that the kitchen was closed , so no restaurant for evening dinner and no hot breakfast , both of which we relied on when booking, a group needing four bedrooms, this did not give us the opportunity to cancel and cost us £50 per night in unwanted taxis. Supplied “continental breakfast “ was derisory and for some later arrived guests non existent as not replenished. One night the bar tender suddenly closed the bar 5 minutes after guests received a nightcap and literally told the 8 guests there to leave, retire to the lounge where we discovered only seating for six. Also derisory was an offer of a £4 discount for the breakfast situation.
So we had to waste time and energy contacting Red Cat head office to resolve things, not what you want when on holiday. There is more but what is the point as they are selling the business within days.
Great location and views. The staff were excellent
It was pretty run down and as it was about to close for renovations there was now cooked food service .
Comfortable and cosy. Good parking
The biggest problem was that there was no bar and no restaurant and no warning of this closure.
Staff member we met on arrival and at dinner was welcoming and helpful. Location was beautiful with great views. We were also given an upgrade on our room so that was very spacious and comfortable.
Great location with sea views, very picturesque.
It needed some TLC and a good clean, there was lots of cobwebs hanging from the ceilings!
Location . Friendly staff
Location is wonderful.
Staff are friendly and work hard.
Food was good.
Bed was comfortable.
Rooms need some tlc and updating and the cleaning needs to be looked at.
Lots of stains on carpets and mould around the bath/shower easy to rectify but just left to get worse
Lots of peeling paint in the rooms and corridors.
Such a shame as it's a beautiful location and could be a beautiful place.
Great location and friendly staff.
The room decor was a little tired. That said work was clearly being undertaken whilst we were there
Le cadre, la maison
Tout était ok
Really comfortable place to stay in a gorgeous setting. Delicious food in the pub on site. Staff were very welcoming and helpful. Would definitely stay again.
Nothing
The hotel is located in an outstanding area, and the building itself is beautiful and full of character. The staff were genuinely lovely, helpful, and welcoming throughout our stay, which made a very positive impression. Lucas, the manager, was especially helpful and professional in resolving an issue we had regarding breakfast.
One disappointment was the “sea view” description. While you could technically see the sea, it was only visible through a small window and only if you stood in the right position. It did not feel like a true sea-view room as advertised.
Another issue was that there was no hot breakfast available on Monday and Tuesday, which had not been mentioned before arrival even though we booked and paid for breakfast. Thankfully, Lucas handled the situation well and refunded the breakfast charge promptly, which we appreciated.
Staff were very friendly and helpful. Dined in the on site restaurant and the food was amazing. Room has everything we needed and was clean. A little bit of general maintenance was needed but to be expected for a building of that age and its occupancy rate. Views were beautiful and plenty of parking. Breakfast was tasty but not sure on value for money. Overall a good stay and would book again.
Nice location
Difficult to find the entrance and the light go burst in my room. Not safe !
The room offered a great view from the window, adding a sense of openness and calm to the stay. It was well-equipped with everything needed, making it comfortable and practical without any noticeable gaps. The building itself has a historic character, which gives the place a distinctive atmosphere that feels more memorable than a standard modern hotel. The staff were consistently friendly and approachable, contributing to a smooth and pleasant experience throughout. The location was convenient, making it easy to get around and access nearby attractions. Overall, it felt like an ideal place for a short break, balancing comfort, character, and practicality effectively.
Nothing to note here. I was satisfied with all aspects of the stay and did not encounter any issues or shortcomings. Everything met expectations, and there was nothing that stood out as needing improvement. The room might be a bit old, but it was very clean and reasonable.
Lovely room comfortable bed with all necessary facilities. Nice view
Restaurant was shut
Location, staff and food
The room was dusty and tired. The shower and tiles needed some refreshment.
Location is good. Easy to go for walks inland or to and along the beach. Comfortable although small room (top floor). View of the sea was good. The lounge was a good size. The food was lovely. The bar meals especially. Service was quite good. In the evenings there were 2 staff when we arrived, though only 1 on our second night.
The first thing was that I sent a message asking if our room would be on 1st or 2nd floor, as l‘d read about accessibility concerns from other reviewers. Didn’t receive a response. When I asked about this, it was just brushed off blaming head office. Nice. Unfortunately one of us has mobility issues and the stairs are numerous and very steep. Had I known, I wouldn’t have booked or cancelled the reservation. On our 2nd night, It took a long time to get our food as the manager appeared to be receptionist, bar man and waiter all in one. The breakfast was quite good and reasonably priced. The breakfast staff were quite friendly. I noticed that some items seemed to be listed as part of the cooked breakfast but missing when food arrived. I get the impression that there‘s a conscious effort to keep costs down and bookings up. I‘m pleased I stayed in early spring as it had about the right amount of guests and visitors using the bar. Judging by the volume of outside tables, it must get very busy in summer. Then I would wonder about the staff—customers ratio.
