The room offered a great view from the window, adding a sense of openness and calm to the stay. It was well-equipped with everything needed, making it comfortable and practical without any noticeable gaps. The building itself has a historic character, which gives the place a distinctive atmosphere that feels more memorable than a standard modern hotel. The staff were consistently friendly and approachable, contributing to a smooth and pleasant experience throughout. The location was convenient, making it easy to get around and access nearby attractions. Overall, it felt like an ideal place for a short break, balancing comfort, character, and practicality effectively.
Nothing to note here. I was satisfied with all aspects of the stay and did not encounter any issues or shortcomings. Everything met expectations, and there was nothing that stood out as needing improvement. The room might be a bit old, but it was very clean and reasonable.
Lovely room comfortable bed with all necessary facilities. Nice view
Restaurant was shut
Location, staff and food
The room was dusty and tired. The shower and tiles needed some refreshment.
Location is good. Easy to go for walks inland or to and along the beach. Comfortable although small room (top floor). View of the sea was good. The lounge was a good size. The food was lovely. The bar meals especially. Service was quite good. In the evenings there were 2 staff when we arrived, though only 1 on our second night.
The first thing was that I sent a message asking if our room would be on 1st or 2nd floor, as l‘d read about accessibility concerns from other reviewers. Didn’t receive a response. When I asked about this, it was just brushed off blaming head office. Nice. Unfortunately one of us has mobility issues and the stairs are numerous and very steep. Had I known, I wouldn’t have booked or cancelled the reservation. On our 2nd night, It took a long time to get our food as the manager appeared to be receptionist, bar man and waiter all in one. The breakfast was quite good and reasonably priced. The breakfast staff were quite friendly. I noticed that some items seemed to be listed as part of the cooked breakfast but missing when food arrived. I get the impression that there‘s a conscious effort to keep costs down and bookings up. I‘m pleased I stayed in early spring as it had about the right amount of guests and visitors using the bar. Judging by the volume of outside tables, it must get very busy in summer. Then I would wonder about the staff—customers ratio.
Staff and location were fab.
The property is tired and run down and needs some love and attention
The hotel is situated in a beautiful place, with lovely grounds and elevated above the coast line. The hotel is 16th century so as expected, it has lots of character and didn’t expect it to be anything more or less than it was. It was so relaxing and our room overlooked the sea and as it was the first warm days of the year we were able to have drinks outside. Breakfast was good and varied and served by attentive staff who had a smile and a chat for us. Rooms were cleaned and tidied each day and tea & coffee replenished, (although this wasn’t intrusive at all and took place when we were out each day.) Bedding very clean. We ate dinner in the restaurant on two nights and were very impressed with the standard of the food. Dogs allowed in the bar which was nice and interesting to meet locals who call in for a drink. The manager was very pleasant and interesting and took the time to chat to us after our meal. It was quiet at night which suited us and It really is a beautiful place to stay and ideally situated to visit other areas.
If I had to be picky, I would mention the shower in room 4 which comes away from the wall frequently and just needs fixing. The bar where we ate on the first night could maybe do with some low background music to improve atmosphere - would create ambience with candles on the dining tables also. My husband struggled to get our case upstairs which can’t be avoided as it’s such a characterful building.
Location wonderful, field on doorstep, great for dog. The staff were really helpful and friendly. Lovely views from the terrace. Wonderful location.
Breakfast not as in the pictures , full English much smaller than the pictures. no lunch served as in picture. Evening menu not as in pictures. Very limited choice, with vertually no vegetables. sausages are like chipolates. The pictures of this year are correct, the older pictures show the food as being a lot better. I believe ownership has changed, This is a shame as it is a beautiful old building in a lovely location.
Incredibly friendly staff and delicious restaurant on the ground floor! Very clean comfy rooms. Would definitely return!
It could get a bit chilly at night but it won’t be a problem at all when the weather’s slightly warmer
The staff were great. The whole property has authentic character. The food was very good. Lovely views of the sea.
Not obvious where to check in.
Location excellent. . Room spacious . Bed big and comfy. Lovely shower. View amazing . The one member of staff we saw all day and evening of check-in was attentive and multi-talented. Breakfast staff friendly and attentive.
Understaffed on afternoon and evening. Room lacked character and was sparse. Continental breakfast very limited and no yoghurt or fruit. Full English ok but basic.
A beautiful setting overlooking the gardens and further out, the beach. The food was excellent - we went for Easter Sunday lunch - and one of us eating the vegetarian Wellington felt it was the best Sunday lunch she’d had! We can’t wait to return!
Great location, friendly staff.
It’s not clean by any means and needs a lot of attention, breakfast was ok, we had a full English, well’ I say full, they had run out of some items so we had partial English breakfast, asked if we wanted toast, never arrived and gave up after 30mins, we checked out feeling fairly disappointed to be honest.
Lovely reception, engaged staff and lovely food. Would definitely come again.
We enjoyed our 2 night stay at The Manor House. We went on a Travelzoo deal which was excellent value. The hotel is old and very interesting with beautiful gardens overlooking the sea and we were fortunate to have good weather. Our room up in the attic was very small but had everything we needed. I would definitely advise upgrading to a larger room if possible. We had dinner included and it was very good. Food was freshly prepared with good ingredients. Breakfast was adequate but could have been better. The 'buffet' was just fruit yoghurts, small packets of cereal and small pots of jam. There was no fresh (or even tinned!) fruit which I've never come across before even in the most basic of b&bs, and no choice of bread - just toast. The cooked breakfast was OK. The location is splendid - right by Chesil Beach and easy to get to lots of other interesting places in Dorset. The staff were very friendly and helpful and Jordan in particular went out of his way to ensure we had a good stay.
