Pros:

The hotel was excellent so clean and spacious. Courteous staff. Nothing a problem

Cons:

The disabled parking bays. They simply are just not big enough to swing a car door wide open to get a disabled.person out if someones parked next to you. And as its easier to reverse as cars parked opposite u then cant open the boot for the wheelchair because the sign comes straight across ur boot.

really enjoyed it.
Pros:

Value for money and good atmosphere.

Cons:

Shower soap empty on arrival and bar staff inexperienced with an odd choice of glasses for liquers, neither of which mattered or spoilt the overall very good experience.

Avoid the restaurant
Pros:

I visited the Mercure Bridgwater Hotel for dinner to mark a significant birthday.

The first thing to say is that the chefs should be commended for producing really tasty food - I greatly enjoyed my steak. Their good work should not be overshadowed by the poor service of others.

They are let down, however, by their colleagues. As soon as I arrived at the hotel, I entered my car registration on the tablet at reception to exempt it from parking charges (as I have done at many other hotels). I was then told abruptly by a receptionist that payment was required, even if patronising the hotel restaurant! In what world does a hotel charge its patrons for use of the car park?

Having been shown to our table in the empty restaurant (though the bar area was filling up with tradesmen), we then encountered a waiter who wasn't ready to take our order because his phone wasn't logged in - a prime opportunity to show some initiative and get a pad and pen and write the order down. When asked what the specials were, the waiter could not give an answer (nor did they do anything to source an answer). When the order was taken, the glass of white wine I ordered arrived as a glass of red wine. That had to be rectified. Needless to say, the jug of tap water ordered did not appear - prompting was required.

The food was tasty, it was the only enjoyable feature of my visit. However, between three people, for two courses and glass of wine, the cost was £43 per head. That is a lot of money for a dining experience that provokes more regret at selecting the establishment than enjoyment of its food and customer service.

More broadly, the Mercure Bridgwater represents the demise of British hospitality: nobody cared about providing a good service, most probably because nobody was trained in good service - they wouldn't know what it looks like. I cannot reasonably imagine patronising a hotel restaurant in France or Spain and the waiter not having a clue what the specials of the day were; yet, in this restaurant this is par for the course.

My experience of Mercure Bridgwater Hotel's restaurant left me feeling they were out to take money from me the moment I walked in the door, and provide as poor a service as they could get away with.

I would be very glad to speak to the hotel manager about how my poor experience can be rectified. I will also seek to get in touch with Marco Pierre White Restaurants to convey my disappointment.

Pros:

The air conditioning worked perfectly, which is quite rare in UK hotels.

Cons:

The older receptionist I spoke to on Monday the 13th at around 11 a.m. was quite stern and spoke to me as though I could not understand English. There was also confusion about a £20 parking fee, as I had been told at check-in that I only needed to enter my registration number. A polite explanation and apology would have been appreciated.
