Gasthof Melange

I stayed at Gasthof Melange in Fujikawaguchiko and was honestly very impressed with what I received for the price.

This is not a luxury grand hotel with full-service staff, and I think it’s important to say that upfront. But for the money I paid, the experience exceeded my expectations in almost every way.

The property is set a little off the main road in an area that feels more residential than commercial. For me, that only added to its charm. The side road, the small parking areas, the low lighting, and the house-like surroundings made it feel quiet, cozy, and genuinely welcoming rather than inconvenient or uncomfortable.

When I arrived, it was a little hard to tell where the main entrance was, but following the lit walkway to a side door led to a small reception area with a counter and an electronic bell. A Japanese man came out to greet us, and from the very first moment, he was incredibly warm and welcoming. He asked in broken English whether we spoke Japanese, and although we did not, it was never a problem. He stayed patient while I used a translator, and honestly, he understood quite a lot. More importantly, he never once made us feel awkward or like we were a burden. Everything we needed was treated as important, and that level of sincere hospitality stood out.

The only real downside for me was that our room was on the third floor, and there is no elevator — only a narrow winding staircase. That said, this was not really a fault of the property so much as a challenge for me personally, since I was traveling with a large suitcase and carry-on packed for a two-week international trip. The host apologized several times for the lack of an elevator, which I appreciated.

Once we reached the room, he followed up to make sure everything was fine and noticed my surprise when I realized I had accidentally booked a room with one double bed instead of two separate beds.

It was quiet, clean and well kept. The gentleman who runs the place will do everything you request and more.

Lovely and helpful host, he gave us a brochure to help us keep busy in the area on a cloudy day and let us know the forecast. The room was spacious and the building had a very friendly vibe with some shared conveniences, such as a fridge, microwave, and big room for chatting or dining. Location is nice and quiet.

Incredibly friendly staff, comfortable, quiet and out of the way so you don't hear people passing by Charming old house, and still very close to lake Kawaguchi.

Location was great. It was very close to the lake and the view of Mount Fuji can be seen as you walk out to the street.

The property was very clean and the owner was very helpful and welcoming. He responded to all request to the highest standard and went above and beyond to make sure that the stay was pleasant and comfortable. This property has an stunning view of Mount Fuji right from the road where it is located.
