Cabo da Roca is the westernmost point of mainland Portugal, as well as continental Europe. Luís Vaz de Camões described it as the place "Where the earth ends and the sea begins" (in Os Lusíadas, Canto III). A stone pattern with a tombstone mark this geographical feature to all who visit this place. Its flora is diverse and, in many cases, has unique species, being the object of several studies that also extend to geomorphology, among others. Cascais is a seaside resort in Portugal, just west of Lisbon. It is known for its sandy beaches and the bustling marina. The historic center houses the medieval Fortress of Our Lady of Light and the Citadel Palace, a former royal retreat.
