Upon your arrival at Semera airport, meet your tour guide at the airport and prepare for the journey to the Danakil Depression. Then drive from Semera to Lake Afdera. On the way, stop at local villages to experience the Afar culture and enjoy scenic views of the barren desert landscapes. After lunch break, relax at Lake Afdera, a saltwater lake surrounded by natural hot springs. In the afternoon drive to Erta Ale volcano.
Late afternoon you arrive at Erta Ale Base Camp. After a short rest, start 40 minutes to 1 hour moderate trek to Erta Ale Volcano. Reach the crater and experience the glowing lava lake, one of the rare continuously active lava lakes in the world. Spend time near the crater, capturing photos and enjoying the surreal environment.
Early Morning, watch the sunrise over Erta Ale while enjoying your breakfast. Then drive to Dallol (Hamed Ela), a small village near the salt flats (approx. 5 hours). This drive takes you through remote Afar villages and unique desert landscapes.
Arrive in Dallol (Hamed Ela) and settle into a basic camp followed by lunch break. After lunch, visit the salty Dallol pool and salt mountain. Conclude the day enjoying the spectacular sunset over the salt flats. The shimmering salt fields offer a surreal and peaceful atmosphere.
Early Morning visit Dallol, one of the most geologically active areas in the world. Explore the vivid sulfur springs, acidic pools, and bizarre salt formations that create otherworldly landscapes. Visit nearby sites such as the salt canyons and salt mining areas, where Afar locals still extract salt blocks using traditional tools and camel caravans.
By midday, return to Hamed Ela base camp for lunch and pack up. Then begin the drive to Mekele through a breathtaking vast desert (approx. 3 hours). In the evening explore Mekele, the capital city of Tigray region and the biggest city in northern Ethiopia.
In the morning, your guide will pick you from your hotel in Mekele. Begin to drive to Hawzen (Gheralta area), where the churches are located. You will arrive in Hawzen by noon. After lunch break at local restaurant, visit Abuna Yemata Guh church one of the most famous rock-hewn churches in Tigray. The church is carved into a cliffside at an altitude of about 2,580 meters (8,460 feet) above sea level. It requires a challenging hike and a bit of climbing, but the views and the experience are unforgettable. You will have an assistant person during the climb. Abune Yemata Guh church was built in the 5th or 6th century by Abune Yemata, one of the Nine Saints who spread Christianity in Ethiopia. Inside the church, the walls and ceilings are decorated with well-preserved frescoes dating back centuries. Late afternoon, drive back to your hotel for overnight stay.
In the morning, visit the churches of Mariam Korkor and Daniel Korkor. These two churches are located on the same height and involve a steep ascent, but the effort is rewarded with incredible views and the chance to explore ancient religious sites. The hike typically takes 3-4 hours round trip, depending on your pace. Mariam Korkor church is believed to date back to the 6th century, part of Ethiopia’s ancient rock-hewn church tradition. Unlike smaller rock churches, Mariam Korkor is large and spacious, with a high ceiling and multiple sections inside. The interior is decorated with ancient frescoes, including biblical figures, angels, and saints. Daniel Korkor church is also located high on a mountain cliff. The climb is demanding but rewarding, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Gheralta landscape. In the afternoon, have lunch at local restaurant and drive back to Mekelle. Then we will safely drop you at your chosen destination, be it your hotel, the airport or any other.
