Wat Mahathat, located in Ayutthaya, Thailand, is one of the most significant and well-known temples in the ancient city. It is famous for the iconic Buddha head entwined in the roots of a Banyan tree. The temple was built in the 14th century and served as a royal monastery. Its central prang, once a towering structure, has partially collapsed but remains a striking example of early Ayutthaya architecture.
Wat Phra Ram is another historic temple in Ayutthaya, situated near the Grand Palace. It was constructed in 1369 by King Ramesuan on the site where his father, King U-Thong, the founder of Ayutthaya, was cremated. The temple features a prominent prang and several smaller chedis and is surrounded by serene water gardens, reflecting the importance of water in Thai culture.
Wat Ratchaburana, also in Ayutthaya, is a well-preserved temple built in 1424 by King Borommarachathirat II. It was constructed to honor his two elder brothers who died in a duel for the throne. The temple's main prang is richly decorated and contains beautiful stucco work. Beneath the prang is a crypt that once housed valuable treasures and artifacts, many of which are now displayed in the Chao Sam Phraya Museum.
Take a tuk-tuk to the Pier to board the boat for a scenic boat ride. Sail, pass by landmarks like Wat Chaiwatthanaram, Wat Phanan Choeng, St. Joseph’s Church, and Wat Phutthaisawan, and immerse yourself in the rich history and remarkable architecture of Ayutthaya.
