On this day excursion to the wonderfully picturesque Ouzoud Falls, you can escape the heat and bustle of Marrakech. These beautiful falls plummet 360 feet (110 meters) to the earth below, surrounded by an emerald cape of thousands of olive trees. Admire the falls from several vantage points and, if desired, engage a local guide to take you closer. In a region famed for its austere desert vistas, these falls provide a striking contrast and provide excellent shooting opportunities. After being picked up from your hotel or riad in Marrakech in the morning, drive by 4wd car or minibus (150 km) northeast to the Atlas Mountains settlement of Tanaghmeilt, which is home to the Ouzoud Falls. Your expert guide will provide information and tales about this picturesque region as you travel by lush green valleys, historic water mills, and acres of fruit trees.
Ouzoud Falls, at 110 meters high, are the tallest in North Africa. Ouzoud means olive in Berber, so it's no surprise that the plateau above the falls is covered in hundreds of olive trees. Because of iron oxides in the soil, the ground underneath is brick-red. A short trail leads to a stunning display of six separate waterfalls pouring down the cliffside. It is a welcome sight in an area that is frequently afflicted by drought. Keep your camera handy since there will be several photo opportunities. If you're lucky, you could see a macaque monkey close in the morning. A beautiful rainbow may appear above the falls in the afternoon sun!
You may stroll down stone stairs to the bottom of the falls for a new perspective of Ouzoud Falls. Hire a Morocco tour guide to show you several caves along the trip. Before returning to Marrakech, have a classic tagine at a restaurant in the shadow of olive trees. Your leisurely day excursion to Ouzoud Falls finishes at 5 p.m. with drop-off at your hotel or riad.
