No trip to Johannesburg  is complete without a visit to Soweto, a former township from the times of Apartheid

The name coming from south west township. Starting about 15 km away from the center of Johannesburg, it comprises some 63 sq km and is where an estimated one million people live. Deepkloof Extension, viewpoint of Soweto Towers, Kliptown Charter, Shanty town, Matchbox and elephant Houses and Hostels are some of the highlights. You will visit the only street in the World with two Nobel Peace Price residents, see the inside of Nelson's Mandela's former Soweto home and Hector Pieterson Memorial - dedicated to the young boy who was the first fatality of the June 1976 uprising. Add a visit to a local restaurant (Sakhumzi) for lunch where you can taste the famous soweto - burger or African recipes.

What to expect

After you have been collected from your hotel you will make your way to Soweto. Along the way you will drive past the Diepkloof ext, Baragwanath Taxi Rank and Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, to name a few. You will visit an informal settlement, drive past Maponya Shopping Mall, walk through Freedom Square and Freedom Charter Memorial. Walk through the Regina Mundi Church and drive along Vilakazi Street.

You will also have the opportunity to visit Mandela House Museum, entrance Fees to the Museum included. Visit the Hector Pieterson Museum, outside the Prescient. See the homes of Nobel peace prize winner Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu. Towards the end of the tour you will visit a local shebeen and taste a type of beer drunk by the people of Soweto if your older than 18 years (time permitting and beer own account). On the drive back to your hotel you will go past the Soccer City Stadium.
