During the 1918 Spring Offensive, Bapaume was captured by the German army. Although defended by New Zealand troops, the town was briefly lost, only to be retaken by the Kiwis in August 1918. Notably, it was in this area that the New Zealanders played a crucial role in stopping the German advance, Operation Michael.

The Caterpillar Valley Cemetery and Memorial is located on Bazentin Ridge, near Longueval. This was the site of the New Zealand Division's first engagement in the Battle of the Somme, in September 1916. The cemetery contains numerous New Zealand graves and serves as the memorial for those New Zealanders who died in the area and have no known graves.
