    During the 1918 Spring Offensive, Bapaume was captured by the German army. Although defended by New Zealand troops, the town was briefly lost, only to be retaken by the Kiwis in August 1918. Notably, it was in this area that the New Zealanders played a crucial role in stopping the German advance, Operation Michael.
