The High Cathedral of St. Martin in Mainz, or Mainz Cathedral for short, is the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Mainz and is under the patronage of St. Martin of Tours. The east choir is dedicated to St. Stephen.
The Catholic parish church of Saint Stephan in Mainz was founded in 990 by Archbishop Willigis on the highest elevation of the city. The client was most likely the emperor's widow Theophanu. Willigis wanted to create with it the place of prayer of the empire.

The sanctuary of Isis and Mater Magna originated in Roman Mogontiacum in the 1st century and existed until the 3rd century. During construction work on the "Römerpassage" shopping gallery in downtown Mainz, its structural remains were discovered and uncovered at the end of 1999.
