Join on this 2 day tour with your own private guide.  Day one you walk around Rome and see some of the city’s highlights; the Coliseum (including the inside) the Roman Forum, Il Vottoriano, Piazza Venezia, the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and Piazza Navona.  Day two you visit Vatican City to see the Sistine Chapel (all entrance fees included).

    Day 1

    Colosseum and City Highlights

    The day begins at the Coliseum where you meet your guide and with reserved tickets (no queuing) you go straight inside.   You have a little time to wander about this breathtaking amphitheatre and your guide will tell you something of it history.

    Then it is outside again to see the Arch of Constantine and the Roman Forum.  The forum was the empire’s hub where everything happened; political, religious and social. There is the 1st century Arch of Titus, the House of the Vestal Virgins, the Temple of Saturn, the Senate House and the white marble Arch of Septimus Severus to name a few.

    You then arrive at the Capitoline Hill following a short walk up the Sacred Way.  Here is one of the most famous and breathtaking monuments of modern-day Italy, Il Vittoriano.

    Trevi Fountain

    The tour continues with a visit to the Trevi Fountain,it is more beautiful in real life though and if you follow the legend, throw a coin in the fountain and wish that you will one day return to Rome.

    Pantheon

    Another short walk down a narrow “vincolo” brings you to the Pantheon where you can visit the tomb of the Renaissance painter and architect Raphael.  The day finishes with another walk, past the Ancient Baths of Nero to Piazza Navona and Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers.

    Vatican and Sistine Chapel

    Vatican Museums

    On the next part of the tour you can travel at your own pace and see some of the rooms not on the usual tourist itinerary. You meet with your guide at the entrance to the Vatican museums and head straight for the Belvedere Courtyard followed by the Pio-Clementine Museum with its wonderful display of statues from ancient Rome and Greece. Then the tour continues to see some of the museum’s artworks: the Gallery of Tapestries; the Gallery of Maps that is home to an unparalleled collection of Renaissance Maps; the Sobiesky Room where you will see the Vatican’s largest canvas and the wonderful frescoes in the Immaculate Conception Rooms.

    Linger a while in the stunning Raphael Rooms.  These rooms were painted for Pope Julius II by Raphael and here you will see what are considered to be his greatest masterpieces, the Parnassus and the School of Athens.

    Sistine Chapel

    Next you will enter the Sistine Chapel; home of the conclave to elect a new Pope.  Once inside you will benefit from the information your guide has given and be better able to appreciate Michelangelo’s wonderful ceiling frescoes and those on the walls painted by Botticelli and his contemporaries.

    St. Peter's Basilica

    It is then time for a tour of St. Peter’s Basilica where you will explore the numerous side chapels with their hidden crypts. You will see Michelangelo’s Pietà and your guide will explain why this is the only work that he signed. You will gain an appreciation of the mastery that went into the creation of Bernini’s altarpiece and learn how Michelangelo triumphed over his contemporaries for the honour to paint St. Peter’s magnificent dome.
