Haarlem Hidden Courtyards Self Guided City Exploration Game

1 hour 30 minutes (approximately)
Offered in: English and 1 more

A self-guided walking game through Haarlem's old centre, following the city's story of printing, painting and quiet charity: the hidden courtyards (hofjes) built for the poor, museums grown from merchants' collections, and the statue of Laurens Janszoon Coster, whom Haarlem still credits with inventing movable type. Each stop hides a puzzle you solve on your phone, at your own pace.

The app tells you what you are looking at: an 1849 chemist's shop, the Proveniershof, the almshouses that became the Frans Hals Museum, Teylers, the oldest museum in the Netherlands (1784), the Bakenesserkerk's slender tower, and the town hall built where a count's hunting lodge stood in 1370. Hints are built in; chat support answers 24/7.

The route starts at the Jopenkerk, a brewery inside a former church, and ends at the Coster statue on the Grote Markt. About 4 km on flat streets, 90 to 120 minutes. Easy, in English or Dutch, good for couples, families and first-time visitors.

What to expect

Discover Haarlem on a self-guided walking game through its hidden courtyards and quiet old streets.

You will start at the Jopenkerk, a former church that is now a brewery, and follow a trail through the old centre: Van der Pigge, a drugstore that has kept its 1849 interior, the Nieuwe Kerk by Jacob van Campen, the Proveniershof, the old almshouses opposite the Frans Hals Museum, Teylers Museum (the oldest museum in the Netherlands), the Bakenesserkerk and the Waalse Kerk. Along the way you'll peek into the hofjes, the courtyards that wealthy Haarlem residents built to house people in need. At each stop you will study your surroundings (dates on facades, carved figures, letters on a monument, the gilded tips of a fence) to solve a puzzle that reveals your next clue, plus the real history of the place you're standing in.

You can play alone or bring your whole group, any day and any hour: just book a ticket and start whenever you want. The walk takes about 90-120 minutes with optional breaks, over roughly 3.8 km (2.4 miles), and ends on the Grote Markt, by the town hall and the statue of Laurens Janszoon Coster, the man Haarlem long credited with inventing printing.
