One of the most distinctive monuments in Rome today is Il Vittoriano; built in 1885 in honour of King Victor Emmanuel II. Built in the neoclassical style, this imposing building is referred to as the “Wedding Cake” by the locals, for reasons which will become clear! Located nearby is the Quirinal Palace, the official residence of the current Italian President.
