Bajo Caracoles is a small town on Route 40 in Santa Cruz, and is the access to the Cueva de las Manos. It has a historic "hotel" that is an old country bowling alley. It is a haven in the middle of the steppe, with a service station and views of the distant Monte San Lorenzo, a snow-capped peak in the Andes. It is strategically located on National Route 40, about 128 km south of the city of Perito Moreno, and is an excellent place to stock up or refuel before touring the attractions of the surrounding areas.
