We begin your tour of North Macedonia by leaving Tirana early in the morning and heading north toward the country’s capital, Skopje. Along the way, you will notice the striking contrasts between regions and cities, from quiet countryside to remnants of the communist era, including old industrial complexes, bunkers, and historic slogans that tell stories of the past. Your first stop is the serene Bigorski Monastery of St. John the Baptist, an architectural gem surrounded by the lush landscapes of Mavrovo National Park. Here, centuries of spiritual devotion are reflected in intricate wood carvings, frescoes, and the peaceful rhythm of monastic life.
Continuing the journey, we arrive in Tetovo, where we visit two unique sites: the tranquil Arabati Baba Tekke and the vividly adorned Painted Mosque. Both monuments reveal the harmonious coexistence of faiths and the rich cultural heritage of the region.
In the late afternoon, we reach Skopje, the dynamic capital of North Macedonia. Your walking tour begins at the Vardar River, where its iconic bridges connect the city’s historical and modern faces. Next, we explore the bustling Old Bazaar and the historic Kurshumli Han, followed by visits to the sacred St. Spas Church and the Mustafa Pasha Mosque. The day concludes with a panoramic view from Skopje Fortress and a stroll through the lively city center, including Macedonia Square and the birthplace of Mother Teresa.
On the second day, your North Macedonia trip continues south toward the enchanting town of Ohrid. Along the way, you may choose an optional detour to Bitola, adding about an hour of scenic driving. If we add Bitola, there is less free time to explore Ohrid.
In Ohrid, you will explore one of the oldest human settlements in Europe, a town where history, culture, and nature intertwine beautifully. Visit its ancient churches, walk along its charming stone streets, and admire the shimmering waters of Lake Ohrid. Each corner of the town tells a story, from Byzantine frescoes to Ottoman architecture, leaving a lasting impression of the region’s rich past.
After discovering the cultural and natural treasures of Ohrid, we drive back to Tirana, concluding this immersive two-day journey through North Macedonia with memories of spiritual landmarks, majestic landscapes, and vibrant city life. Drop off in Durres is possible.
