Our day starts with a hotel pickup in Tirana, from where we journey south through scenic countryside toward Peshtan Village. Along the way, enjoy views of rolling hills, river valleys, and traditional Albanian settlements as we leave the capital behind and head into a more rural landscape. Upon arrival in Peshtan, a charming mountainside village rich in history, we’ll settle into a local guesthouse before enjoying a light, home-cooked lunch. The village played a significant role during the Greco-Italian War and still bears traces of World War II, offering a fascinating window into Albania’s past. In the afternoon, we’ll take a short, easy walk through the village and its surroundings to explore historical sites, including remnants from early battle positions and wartime artifacts left behind during WWII. As evening approaches, relax in the peaceful setting of Peshtan, enjoy traditional hospitality, and unwind over dinner at the guesthouse. Overnight in Peshtan.
Trekking through Forests and Scenic Valleys Our adventure begins with a scenic 11 km hike from Peshtan to Limara, a remote village that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding valley and mountains. The trail weaves through dense forests, with occasional breaks to catch panoramic vistas of the Deshnica River Valley and the majestic Strakavec Peak. Along the way, we will encounter a stone bridge built by Ali Pasha Tepelena in the 19th century, adding a historical touch to your hike. Overnight in Limara. A Journey Through Pastoral Beauty On this day, we’ll hike from Limara to Hoshteve, passing through lush beeches and oak forests, vibrant meadows, and the almost deserted village of Deshnica—one of the most isolated villages in Europe. The trail rewards us with spectacular views of the Dhembeli Mountain Range. After exploring Hoshteve, a transfer will take us to the village of Sheper, where we’ll stay in a local guesthouse. Traversing the Dhembeli Pass Today’s hike from Sheper to Permet offers one of the most scenic routes of the tour, with a challenging yet rewarding ascent and descent. We’ll cross the Dhembeli Pass (1,468 m), which connects two valleys and provides panoramic views of the Vjosa River and the Zagoria Valley. Along the descent, we’ll stop at the village of Leuse, where you can admire an Orthodox Church adorned with frescoes. After a thrilling descent, we’ll arrive in Permet, known for its picturesque scenery and cultural heritage. Overnight in Permet. A Refreshing Day at the Thermal WatersToday’s hike takes us along the Vjosa River, known as one of the last wild rivers in Europe. After transferring along a scenic road, we’ll start the hike at the Langarica Canyon and make our way to the Benja Thermal Springs, where you can relax in the naturally heated waters. These sulfuric springs are renowned for their curative properties, making it the perfect place to unwind after several days of hiking. Overnight near the Thermal Springs. After breakfast, we depart from Përmet and drive south toward the UNESCO World Heritage town of Gjirokastra. Known as the “City of Stone,” Gjirokastra is renowned for its well-preserved Ottoman-era architecture, characterized by elegant stone houses with distinctive slate roofs, narrow cobbled streets, and panoramic viewpoints. Upon arrival, we’ll explore the historic old town, wandering through its atmospheric streets and traditional neighborhoods. Highlights include a visit to the Ethnographic Museum, located in one of the city’s grand Ottoman houses, offering insight into local life, customs, and history. We’ll also learn about notable figures from Gjirokastra, including Ismail Kadare, Albania’s most internationally acclaimed writer, whose legacy is deeply connected to the city. Time permitting, enjoy views of the imposing Gjirokastra Fortress towering above the town, with sweeping vistas over the Drino Valley. In the late afternoon, we begin our journey back to Tirana.
