Piazza del Campidoglio is a monumental square located on the top of the Campidoglio hill in Rome. It rises on the Asylum, the depression located between the Arx and the Capitolium, the two summits of the Capitol, and below it is the Tabularium, visible from the Roman Forum. Despite an initial abandonment in the medieval period, the Tabularium, already in the twelfth century, had been chosen as the seat of the municipality.
The Capitoline Museums constitute the main municipal civic museum of Rome, part of the Museum System of Roma Capitale, with an exhibition area of 12,977 m². Opened to the public in 1734, under Pope Clement XII, they are considered the first museum in the world, intended as a place where art could be enjoyed by everyone and not just by the owners.
The Basilica of St. Mary of the Altar of Heaven (Basilica di Santa Maria in Ara coeli al Campidoglio) is a titular basilica in Rome, located on the highest summit of the Campidoglio. It is still the designated Church of the city council of Rome, which uses the ancient title of Senatus Populusque Romanus.
