North of Bangkok lie the provinces of Ang Thong and Sing Buri, two rural provinces in the heart of Central Thailand that are rarely visited by foreign travellers. Among rice fields, villages and waterways, you will find centuries-old temples, impressive Buddha images and important Buddhist sanctuaries.
During this full-day excursion, you leave the well-trodden tourist routes behind and discover a very different side of Thailand. Visit remarkable temples and historic sites, admire some of the country’s largest Buddha images, explore a colourful Buddhist Hell Garden and enjoy a local lunch. Along the way, you will get a glimpse of everyday life beyond Bangkok and experience a quieter, more traditional side of Central Thailand.
An interesting excursion for those who want to discover more of Thailand beyond the usual sights and explore places where few international visitors venture.
Please wait in the lobby of your hotel on the ground floor at the agreed pick-up time. Your guide will meet you there and accompany you on the tour.
At 7:00 AM, you will be picked up from your hotel in Bangkok for a special full-day excursion to the provinces of Ang Thong and Sing Buri. These two provinces lie north of Bangkok, in the heart of Central Thailand, but are rarely visited by foreign travellers. The first stop is Wat Muang in Ang Thong, best known for its enormous seated Buddha towering above the temple complex. At approximately 95 metres high, it is the tallest Buddha image in Thailand and an impressive sight as we approach the temple grounds. Next to the giant Buddha is the so-called Hell Garden, an area of the temple complex featuring large, sometimes rather graphic statues depicting scenes from Buddhist hell and the consequences of wrongdoing. The statues are intended to remind visitors in a visual way of the consequences of their actions and the Buddhist principle of karma.
We then continue to Wat Khun Inthapramun, a historic temple best known for its enormous reclining Buddha. The image dates back to the Ayutthaya period and is approximately 50 metres long. What makes the site particularly interesting is that the reclining Buddha lies outside the original temple, while the ruins of the old temple can still be seen surrounding it. The temple has been restored several times over the centuries, offering an interesting combination of religious heritage and the history of the former Ayutthaya Kingdom.
We then stop for lunch. If you take the tour on a Saturday or Sunday, lunch will be at Ban Rachan Retro Thai Market in Sing Buri. This local weekend market has a nostalgic, traditional Thai atmosphere and brings together local dishes, snacks, products and handicrafts. It is a pleasant place to experience the local food culture and atmosphere, away from the large numbers of foreign visitors found at the better-known markets around Bangkok. If your tour takes place on a weekday, the market is unfortunately closed and lunch will instead be served at a local restaurant. WE ONLY VISIT BAN RACHAN OLD-STYLE MARKET ON SATURDAY AND SUNDAY. ON WEEKDAYS THE MARKET IS NOT OPEN.
After lunch, we visit Wat Phra Non Chaksi Worawihan, an important temple in Sing Buri with a long history dating back to before the Ayutthaya period. The temple is particularly known for its impressive reclining Buddha, which is approximately 46 metres long. The image is regarded as an important religious symbol of Sing Buri and the temple is mainly visited by Thai worshippers.
The final temple of the day is Wat Phikun Thong, a large and colourful temple complex in Sing Buri. Its most prominent feature is the enormous golden seated Buddha image, which towers above the temple grounds. The temple is also known for its large pond with fish and turtles, as well as the many statues and religious artworks found throughout the complex. It provides a peaceful end to the day and one final opportunity to discover a lesser-known temple in Central Thailand before we return to Bangkok. In the late afternoon, we drive back to Bangkok, where you will be dropped off at your hotel.
