Koh Ker, one of the oldest cities in the Khmer Empire, will make you feel like a modern day explorer. Built between 928 AD and 944AD it was home to over 10,000 people. The 7 tiered Prang pyramid is set in the jungle and is about 36 metres high. The ruins are covered in moss and you can see where prayer palaces were built for the kings. At the highest point all you can see around you is forest. With very few tourists visiting Koh Ker you can explore the crumbled and weather beaten ruins at leisure. A highlight is Prasat Bram or Five Temples with two of the brick towers completely overgrown with strangled figs. At the main Koh Ker area Carpark you will find small food and drink stalls but no toilets.
