Cappadocia’s underground cities are a regional hallmark, with over 100 such cities discovered. Built from the Hittite era to provide shelter and concealment, these architectural wonders have long served as a refuge. Early Christians also used them to escape Arab invasions. Prepare to step back in time and experience the stone age.
Pigeons have been crucial to Cappadocia, second only to horses in importance. These iconic birds are closely tied to the region’s heritage. Locals used pigeon droppings as fertilizer for agriculture and pigeon eggs in church decorations. The discovery that pigeon eggs were essential for creating durable frescoes transformed both the lives of the people and the pigeons. They built large rock-carved pigeon houses, nurtured the birds, and lived in harmony. While fresco artists are no longer active, this shared way of life endures.
Avanos is one of the oldest settlements of Cappadocia. The pottery art, which is known to have started at the time of the Hittites, still continues and there are many workshops. This visit includes lunch and a short tour along the Kızılırmak.(Red River)
Cappadocia is renowned for its unique landforms, and Pasabag is the best place to experience them, showcasing the harmonious coexistence of nature and humanity. Also known as Monk’s Valley, Pasabag offers a chance to see the iconic mushroom-shaped fairy chimneys, as well as St. Simeon’s monk cell carved into the rock.
The Göreme Open-Air Museum is considered one of the earliest monasteries in Christian history. This rock-hewn settlement, where education was provided to spread Christianity, has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1985, known for its frescoed churches and rock-cut living spaces.
Love Valley is one of Cappadocia’s most famous and photographed spots. Its unique rock formations create a captivating landscape, making it feel like a natural photography studio.
