  Ragusa Ibla

  Ragusa Ibla or Ragusa Inferiore is one of the two districts that form the historic center of the Sicilian city of Ragusa, extended on a small hill, rebuilt, after the earthquake of 1693, entirely in Baroque style. Starting from Piazza Pola, it is impossible not to admire the remains of the Church of Sant'Agostino, the Palazzo Di Quattro, the Church of Santa Teresa and its Collegio. And again: Piazza Chiaramonte, where the Church of San Francesco dell'Immacolata stands, Palazzo Battaglia the first built after the great earthquake, the Church of the Annunziata, Palazzo Arezzi, the Church of San Giorgio. But the religious buildings are really numerous: the Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli, of Santa Barbara, of the Anime Purganti.   But this is only one of the many denominations that Modica had over the centuries: among others, the Phoenician Mùtika (hotel, residence: probable analogy with the Phoenician Utica, city where Catone Uticense died), the Sicilian Mùrika ( bare rock, not cultivable), the Greek Μότουκα, the Roman Mothyca.
