120 km from Yerevan, on the left bank of the r. Arpa Vayots-Dzorsky marz of Armenia, stretched tiny village Areni - the object of pilgrimage for connoisseurs of vintage wines and unique monuments of architecture. Beginning in 2009, the village hosts an annual international wine festival - a large-scale cultural event devoted to tasting young and aged wines of local bottling, in particular the products of the Areni Winery winery, founded in 1994 on the basis of a small family business.
Khor Virap, located at the foot of Mount Ararat, near the border with Turkey. It is a place of pilgrimage, which is associated with the legend of Grigor Lusavorich (Grigor the Illuminator). According to church tradition, Grigor was imprisoned by the order of Tsar Trdat III, convicted of practicing Christianity and spending 13 years in it. Those who wish can descend into the dungeon, which has a depth of 6 m and a diameter of 4.4 m. Right in front of you the symbol of Armenia, Mount Ararat, will appear before you from the closest distance and in all its glory.
Further we will continue our journey to the village of Vayots Dzor region - Areni. Next we will go to the monastery complex Noravank, built in the XIII-XIV centuries. The complex is located on the ledge of a narrow winding gorge of a tributary of the river Arpa. The gorge is famous for the sheer red rocks towering behind the monastery. Return to Yerevan.
