  Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el Bahari

  The magnificent Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari ranks among the most remarkable funerary monuments of the ancient world, rivaling the grandeur of the Pyramids. Carved directly into the soaring cliffs opposite the Valley of the Kings, the temple unfolds across three expansive terraces connected by wide ramps. Each level is framed by colonnades of simple, square pillars. Dedicated to one of ancient Egypt’s few female pharaohs, Hatshepsut fittingly described her temple as the “Splendor of Splendors.” While earlier phases of construction date back to Mentuhotep II around 2050 BC, many of the original sphinxes and statues have disappeared over time, giving the site a more austere, monolithic look. Inside, the cool stone chambers provide relief from the desert heat and showcase vivid hieroglyphics and beautifully preserved wall reliefs.

  Valley of the Kings

  Colossi of Memnon

  Although little remains of Amenhotep III’s once-magnificent mortuary temple, the two colossal statues that once flanked its entrance still rise proudly after more than 3,400 years. Situated on the west bank of the Nile, just across from Luxor, these massive figures continue to impress visitors with their scale and resilience. Alongside the towering pharaoh statues, you’ll also find smaller representations of his wife, Queen Tiy, and his mother, Mutemwia. Intricate sandstone carvings depicting the Nile god Hapy add further insight into the artistry of the era. Despite centuries of weathering and erosion, the site retains a powerful sense of its original majesty and grandeur.
