The modern city of Torre Annunziata, corresponding to the ancient Oplontis, is well-known for an hidden treasure of the Roman age, the so-called Villa of Poppea, a majestic suburban villa belonged to the Nero's second wife. The guided tour starts in the lush garden, where you see the same trees of that time, replanted after the archaeologist made the plaster casts of the carbonized roots. Then you walk through the rooms of the imperial residence, provided with a thermal suite and a large swimming pool surrounded by olive trees, to see amazing frescoes with mythological scenes and still-nature. At the time of the eruption, there were restoration works in progress inside the villa, therefore no victims were found inside.
