1. Stops at Iconic & Off-the-Beaten-Path Sights
Instead of just driving through the desert, this route includes:
• High Atlas Mountains & Tizi n’Tichka Pass — breathtaking views over snowy peaks and Berber villages.
• Aït Benhaddou Kasbah (UNESCO) — an original mud-brick fortress featured in Game of Thrones and many films.
• Ouarzazate & Atlas Studios — Hollywood of Africa, with film sets and desert landscapes.
These major cultural and visual highlights make the journey itself as memorable as the desert night.
2. Authentic Desert Experience
What sets a 2-day tour apart:
• Overnight in the desert — not just a short visit.
• Sleep under the dunes (often Erg Chebbi) in a traditional desert camp with Berber tents.
• Sunset & sunrise over the dunes — magical and photogenic moments you won’t get on a day trip.
This immersion makes it feel like a real desert adventure, not just a drive-through.
start from your hotel in Marrakech in the early morning. As we travel, we make our way over the dramatic High Atlas Mountains, passing through mountain pass roads at up to 2,260 metres at the peak of the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. We’ll take time to stop at panoramic viewpoints and visit the mythical Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site/ famous movie location. Following lunch by Ait Ben Haddou, we drive past Ouarzazate, nicknamed the “Hollywood of Africa,” and through Valley of Roses. As we near the desert, everything has changed significantly. We reach Merzouga by the late afternoon and your camel will be waiting. You’ll have a ride in the middle of the Erg Chebbi dunes, see a stunning desert sunset and arrive to your luxury or standard desert camp. End your day with a delicious dinner around campfire and listen to the sounds of Berber music and gaze upon the twinkling stars, then retire to your tent.
Wake up early to see the sunrise over the dunes is absolutely magical. We will ride the camel (or 4×4 if you’ve had enough camel!) back to the village of Merzouga after a breakfast at the camp, and then start our journey north on a beautiful route towards Fes. We’ll drive through the Ziz Valley, famous for its date-palm groves and steep gorges, and through the towns of Errachidia and Midelt, where we’ll stop for lunch. The journey passes through the Middle Atlas mountains with the stunning scenery of cedar forests and with any luck, chances to spot wild Barbary macaques near Azrou. We stop near the end of the journey by Ifrane, Morocco’s “Little Switzerland” – a delightful place distinguished by its alpine appearance and pristine streets. Early evening, we reach Fes, your driver will take you your Riaad or hotel, end of your Morocco Desert Tour!
