This monumental landmark in Luxor showcases ancient architecture at its grandest, featuring stunning statues, columns, and the largest temple ever built—just a short distance from the bustle of downtown. The construction of Karnak Temple took over 1,000 years, and its rich variety of art and architecture reflects the diverse history of this remarkable Egyptian site.
This incredible archaeological site is home to numerous tombs adorned with ancient art and hieroglyphics. Visit the tomb of King Tutankhamun, the valley’s most famous site, and tour the temples of Ramses II's sons, Amenhotep III, and other notable rulers, where you can admire the centuries-old art and artifacts.
The massive Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari stands as one of the greatest funerary monuments of the ancient world, rivaling even the Pyramids. Carved into the towering cliffs that overlook the Valley of the Kings, it rises in three vast terraces connected by ramps, with each level marked by a colonnade of simple, mostly undecorated square pillars. The temple’s namesake, one of ancient Egypt's few female pharaohs, aptly referred to her monument as the “Splendor of Splendors.” Though much of the structure dates back to earlier rulers, beginning with Mentuhotep II in 2050 BC, many sphinxes and statues have since vanished, giving the temple a more imposing, monolithic appearance. Inside, the cool stone offers a welcome escape from the region’s intense heat, and visitors can admire the well-preserved wall reliefs and hieroglyphics, some still vivid in color.
Though little remains of the once grand memorial temple of Amenhotep, the two towering statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III still stand guard at the ancient entrance, enduring for over 3,400 years. Today, visitors can journey to the banks of the Nile, just across from Luxor, to marvel at these colossal sculptures. Along with these impressive statues, travelers can also view two smaller figures of the Pharaoh's wife, Tiy, and mother, Mutemwia. Additionally, the sandstone panels depicting the Nile god Hapy offer a closer look at ancient carvings. While much of the Colossi has been lost to time and weather, visitors can still feel the awe this site once inspired.
