This tour is made especially for nature enthusiasts and hikers passionate for less beaten trails and solitary routes. The hiking holiday takes place in Rodnei National Park in Maramures. The highest mountains of the Maramures region, Rodna Mountains, are the eastern end of an outlying arm of the Carpathians. This arm of the Carpathians has had the effect of isolating Maramures from the rest of Romania and the world. Most subsequent invasions have passed it by, leaving its population little changed in millennia. Consequently, this is a region that has a greater tendency to maintain traditional ways than any other region of Romania. This national park shelters iconic mammals like the brown bear and the mysterious lynx, rare birds. The tour is an active one where you can expect to do long hikes, but we will make sure that the effort is rewarded with a day of relaxation afterward. The tour commences promptly at 9 am with a scheduled pick-up from your accommodation. Our journey will lead us towards the captivating North of Romania, with four carefully curated stops that seamlessly blend the beauty of nature with unique tourist attractions. Our first stop will be at Banffy Castle, where we'll indulge in a delightful coffee break and delve into a brief yet captivating historical narrative. Following this, we'll embark on a quest to spot rare birds species in the scenic Transylvanian delta. A highlight of our itinerary includes a visit to the Dance Museum, graciously hosted by our friend Michael, providing an enriching cultural experience. As the day unfolds, we'll culminate our adventure with an evening hike to witness the grandeur of Romania's highest waterfall. Throughout the tour, our aim is to ensure a professional yet warm and friendly atmosphere, making your exploration of Maramures tour a memorable and enjoyable experience.

At 9 am we will take the Mocanita steam train. Vişeu de Sus departure 09:00 Paltin (km 21.6) Arrival approx. 11:00 Vişeu de Sus Arrival approx. 15:30 Paltin Station is the turning point for the regular steam trains. During a longer stop (1-2 hours), passengers can make use of the catering service provided by the CFF team. Plenty of covered and open-air seating is available.

The next stop will be Barsana Monastery. Nestled in the picturesque Maramures region of Romania, the Barsana Monastery is a true gem of Eastern Orthodox architecture. This stunning 18th-century complex is a testament to the region's rich cultural heritage and is a must-visit for anyone interested in history, art, and spirituality. As you approach the monastery, you'll be greeted by a breathtaking view of the surrounding hills and valleys. The complex itself consists of several buildings, including a main church, a bell tower, a chapel, and a museum. The buildings are adorned with intricate wood carvings and colourful frescoes that depict scenes from the Bible and local folklore.
