Situated on the northern slope of Jebel Kebir hill, facing the Strait of Gibraltar, it lies between the Cape Spartel Reserve to the west and the Royal Palace of Jebel Kebir to the east. Named after the notable Greek-American Ion Hanford Perdicaris, who created it in the 1870s and was kidnapped there during the Perdicaris Incident in the mid-1904.
