Built by the Romans around 50 AD, the Pont du Gard is the major element and most prestigious vestige of the ancient aqueduct of Nîmes, designed to bring water from the Eure spring, at the foot of the town of Uzès, to Nîmes.
It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985.
