This special tea ceremony takes place in the most traditional tea room at Nishijin Lifestyle Museum Tondaya, a nationally designated cultural asset with a history spanning more than 140 years.

Within this historic machiya lies a small, authentic tea room known as Rakuju. Its construction was supervised by the 12th-generation tea master of the Musha Koji Senke school, one of the principal schools of Japanese tea ceremony.

Enjoy Uji matcha and traditional Japanese sweets as you immerse yourself in the quiet history and serenity of an authentic tea ceremony, while observing a seasoned tea master perform the ritual.

Following the tea ceremony, we will guide you through Tondaya itself—a 140-year-old machiya designated as a culturally significant landmark by the Kyoto City Government. A treasure trove of historically valuable artifacts and stories, Tondaya offers a deeper understanding of Kyoto’s living heritage, shared by passionate staff.

What to expect

Come explore a beautiful machiya, or authentic wooden townhouse, designated as a culturally significant landmark by the Kyoto government, and participate in an authentic tea ceremony in a historically accurate tea ceremony room.

Tondaya was built a 140 years ago in Nishijin, an area famous for its history with the textile industry. Originally a kimono wholesaler, Tondaya is now dedicated to introducing traditional Kyoto culture and arts to the guests from overseas. If you are interested in Kyoto culture please join us, as the knowledgeable staff are eager to share Tondaya's rich history with you. Personable and seasoned tea masters also look forward to sharing Japan's profound history and culture of tea.

-Staff are experts in various traditional arts, including tea, kimono, calligraphy and flower arranging, but not all of us speak English. We will do the best to provide you with an interpreter, but please understand that a translation device may be used when necessary.

-Please arrive on time for the scheduled experience.

-Please wear socks to protect the machiya.
