What to expect

In 1462, a new style of flower arrangement created in Kyoto was admired for its beauty and elegance.
Unlike traditional flower offerings made for religious purposes, it was designed to express harmony between nature and the space created by and for people. This moment is considered the origin of ikebana, Japan’s unique art of flower arrangement.

Tondaya aims to offer a glimpse into the historically rich, beautiful, and intricate world of ikebana. During this experience, an ikebana master will guide you through the art of ikebana arrangement. Seasonal flowers and all necessary tools will be provided. After the lesson, your completed arrangement will be displayed in front of the garden, creating a beautiful setting for photographs.

After the ikebana experience, we will guide you through Nishijin Lifestyle Museum Tondaya, a 140-year-old machiya (traditional Kyoto townhouse) nationally recognized as a culturally significant heritage property. A treasure trove of historically valuable artifacts and stories, Tondaya offers a deeper insight into Kyoto’s living heritage, shared by our knowledgeable staff.
