What to expect

Get ready to take on the role of samurai in this 2-part cultural experience. First, you will learn about samurai culture firsthand in a 75-minute workshop. After putting on a pair of traditional tabi socks, you will be given an introduction to the samurai and the iconic katana, which will be the central theme of the experience. Put on a kimono or hakama, the formal attire of the samurai and experience the weight of wielding a katana. If time permits, learn about the sensu folding fan and its significance to the samurai despite its seemingly contrasting nature to the katana. Complete your workshop experience with a commemorative photo shoot while striking powerful poses in full samurai garb. —---------The second part of the experience has guests watch an authentic Kenbu sword dance performance. These traditional performances combine swordplay, dance, and poetry in a way that puts focus on the grace and poise of the samurai. The length of this performance depends on which option you choose. The full Kenbu show plan includes a 40-minute performance by 2-3 master performers while the shortened Mini-Kenbu show plan features a condensed 10-minute performance by a single instructor.
