Kumihimo Workshop at a 370 Year Old Braiding Shop in Tokyo

2 hours (approximately)
Offered in: English

We are a traditional braiding company established in 1652 in Tokyo, Japan. We specialises in a Japanese craft technique called Kumihimo which was traditionally used extensively in Japanese garments and accessories such as imperial court costumes, sword knots and sash bands for kimono.
For many years, we have been privileged to serve imperial family and been responsible for re-production of national treasure pieces in museums.
As a company with a history and a desire to preserve the craftsmanship for future generations, we handmake all, from spinning silk threads to dying and braiding, and maintain the very highest standards of quality.

We will allow visitors to experience the essence of Japan's traditional crafts by viewing historical kumihimo archives and watching demonstrations by artisans to observe the kumihimo production process.
