We have a 3 hours birding in Nyandungu Urban Wetland Eco-tourism Park mainly to see birds. Nyandungu is a newly restored wetland within Kigali City; it is located in 1.5km of Kigali International Airport and only 25 minutes drive from the city Center. Over 100 birds were recorded in this area among other White-collared Oliveback, Yellow-breasted Apalis, Double-toothed Barbet, etc.
Umusambi is a Kinyarwanda name meaning Gra-crowned Crane. The village is a newly created sanctuary to save the population of Gra-crowned Crane from the illegal pet trade. Benefiting the protection of the site, more birds are coming to the place for food and reproduction. Many species of Kingfisher i.e Pied, Malachite and African Pygmy use created water ponds as source of food. We spend 2 to 3 hours of the morning to tour around the sanctuary before we have our lunch break.
Wetlands in Bugesera, especially Gashora wetland, are home to papyrus and waterbird species. These places are home to Papyrus Gonolek, Papyrus Canary, Carruther's Cisiticola and flocks of Glossy Ibis. You can have a morning or afternoon at this place to see the most wetland birds of the East African region.
