Your private driver will meet you at your hotel in Bangalore and set out on a scenic drive through the countryside towards Chikmagalur. Along the way, stop at two of the most celebrated towns of the Hoysala dynasty – Halebeedu and Belur.
Halebeedu – Once the capital of the Hoysalas, this temple town is known for its intricately carved stone monuments: Hoysaleswara Temple – dedicated to Lord Shiva, showcasing endless rows of sculptures narrating scenes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana. Shantaleswara Temple – built in honor of Queen Shantala Devi, famous for its feminine grace in stonework. Kedareshwara Temple – blending Hoysala and Chola styles, featuring finely carved friezes. Basadi Jain Temples – simple yet elegant shrines that reflect the region’s multi-faith patronage.
Belur – Known as the “jewel of Indian architecture,” Belur was the early Hoysala capital. Here you will explore: Chennakesava Temple – built in 1117 CE, it is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is considered the finest example of Hoysala craftsmanship, with ornate pillars and friezes. Kappe Chennigaraya Temple – a smaller shrine with detailed carvings. Veera Narayana Temple – remarkable for its finely sculpted images. Ranganayaki Shrine – dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi.
After sightseeing and a relaxed lunch en route, continue your journey through rolling hills and coffee plantations to Chikmagalur. Check in at your hotel and spend the evening at leisure – relax, enjoy the mountain air, or take a gentle stroll through the surrounding estate.
Wake up to the cool mountain breeze of Chikmagalur and choose from one of three experiences:
Option 1: Mullayanagiri Trek Drive up part of the way and trek the final stretch to Mullayanagiri Peak, the highest point in Karnataka (1,930 m). The moderate hike rewards you with sweeping views of the Western Ghats, valleys covered in mist, and endless greenery – an unforgettable nature escape.
Option 2: Birdwatching at Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary Join a naturalist for a guided birdwatching experience in the forested trails of Bhadra. Spot vibrant birdlife such as the Flame-throated Bulbul, Racquet-tailed Drongo, Malabar Whistling Thrush, Velvet-fronted Nuthatch, and many others. A tranquil option for those who enjoy nature at a gentle pace.
Option 3: Muthodi Jeep Safari Embark on a thrilling Jeep Safari through the southern ranges of Bhadra Tiger Reserve. Drive through thick forests and open meadows with opportunities to see elephants, gaurs (Indian bison), sambar deer, wild boars, spotted deer, and a variety of bird species. A highlight is the Jagara Giant, Karnataka’s largest teak tree, nearly 400 years old. With luck, you may even spot elusive predators like leopards.
Return to your hotel for a relaxed breakfast and some leisure time. In the afternoon, set out to a coffee plantation estate. Walk through the lush rows of coffee plants, learn about the cultivation, harvesting, and roasting process, and enjoy a coffee tasting session (seasonal). The rest of the day is free to relax at your hotel, explore the quiet town, or simply enjoy the peaceful plantation setting.
After breakfast, check out from your hotel and begin the drive back to Bangalore. En route, stop at Shravanabelagola, one of the most important Jain pilgrimage centers in India. Ascend Vindhyagiri Hill, climbing more than 600 carved steps. At the summit, marvel at the 57-foot monolithic statue of Bahubali (Gommateshwara) – the tallest free-standing stone statue in the world, dating back to the 10th century. The panoramic views from the hilltop across the countryside are breathtaking and a fitting finale to your journey.
