If you are into photography then this is a perfect location to take photos of Skaradu Town at sunrise or sunset. (we can arrange this for you). We will then walk to a small village, called Organic village, which grows all its crops organically. The afternoon is free to explore. Perhaps you would like to take an optional jeep tour to Satpara Lake or explore the bazaar.
Today you will drive to Khaplu, located 105 kilometres east of Skardu, taking approximately three hours. You will initially follow Indus River and then follow Shyok River all the way to Khaplu. It is a spectacular drive and the contrast of blossom and rugged mountain makes it even more dramatic. You will then check in to the hotel and, after some rest, visit the 14th century Chaqchan Monastery – one of the oldest Muslim Monasteries in Baltistan.
After breakfast, you will drive in a 4×4 jeep for half an hour towards Skardu. Cross Shyok River by a wooden suspension bridge at Daghoni and follow the Thalle Lungma. You will thoroughly enjoy driving through the beautiful villages surrounded by barley corn and potato fields. You will eventually reach Olmo Village, the highest summer settlement on the Thalle side. Here you will be greeted by your camp staff who will provide you with a hot cup of tea. You will then be taken on an acclimatisation hike before returning to camp for dinner. As long as the weather remains kind, there should not be any snow during your trek and you will not need crampons for your boots at any stage. It is advised to bring your own sleeping bag and an inflatable sleeping mat for a comfortable nights sleep. During the day the temperatures are expected to be around 28 – 35 degrees Celsius, however at night they can drop from -3 to -5 degrees.
After breakfast you will continue your first day through beautiful alpine meadows. You will occasionally come across herds of Yaks and cows freely grazing on lush green slopes. Contingency day in case of delays – Islamabad: If driving down the Karakoram Highway you will arrive in Islamabad late afternoon. If you managed to fly the day before then you will spend today sightseeing in Islamabad. In the evening we will have a final group meal. Skardu is a ‘weather dependent’ airport which means the planes will only fly here if the visibility allows line of sight to the runway by the pilot on the approach. Fortunately the weather is mostly clear in the Karakoram but local weather conditions can bring cloud and rain from time to time. If we cannot fly we will travel down to Islamabad by road along the spectacular Karakoram Highway. If we flew up to Skardu this will be an added bonus as it is a fantastic travel experience in its own right. The drive down the Indus River to Islamabad takes two days so this is an important contingency day to allow for this. If we have flown to Islamabad this will be a further day for sightseeing in the capital and your leader will advise the group on the options available for today.
After Breakfast you will be Transfer to Islamabad International Airport for the flight back home
