The Roman quarry of El Mèdol. We start our exciting journey through time and Roman history with a visit to the El Mèdol Roman quarry outside Tarragona to see where many of the huge stone blocks for the structures in Tarragona’s Roman city were quarried over 2000 years ago.
Roman Aqueduct. Next we visit the soaring arches and arcades of Tarragona’s spectacular Roman aqueduct, the Pont del Diable, (Devil’s Bridge). We can actually walk on the remains and your expert guide explains how the Romans were able to build this amazing structure that brought fresh water into Tarraco’s sewers, baths and fountains.
Our first stop in Tarragona is at the "Balcony of the Mediterranean" which has magnificent views of Tarragona's El Miracle beach and Costa Dorada coastline. On this part of the tour your expert guide takes you on a walk around the main attractions of Tarragona's Roman city, which in ancient times was named Tarraco.
Roman circus chariot racing circuit. Next we experience Tarragona's Roman circus where thrilling chariot races took place cheered on by 30,000 ecstatic spectators. You guide takes you to see both the outside and inside of one of the best-preserved circuses in the Western world. We also visit the Praetorium building to enjoy roof-tops views of the Roman and medieval city area.
Roman amphitheatre. We start by literally walking in the footsteps of Roman gladiators in the arena of the well-preserved Roman amphitheatre. Here your guide brings to life how 14,000 spectators experienced the gory to-the-death battles of gladiator fighting.
Medieval Tarragona. Your guide takes you a short stroll through Tarragona’s charming medieval town where many remnants of Roman history are still evident. Here we might stop for a refreshment break on a lovely plaza with a back-drop of Roman walls.
Tarragona Cathedral. On this walk we pass by Tarragona’s impressive medieval cathedral featuring a gothic portal. The cathedral was built on the remains of the religious site dating back to the Roman Empire.
Roman city walls. We finish the walking part of the tour at the Roman city walls, built in the 2nd century - and the oldest Roman construction still conserved outside Italy, the wall originally ran some 3500 metres. Today, around 1100 metres are still intact and border the present day Tarragona medieval quarter.
We finish this tour with a snack lunch, which guests can choose to have in the medieval quarter - or in a picturesque setting outside the city. Lunch can be adapted to suit the guests’ wishes and weather. (Meals are not included in tour price.)
